High temperature properties of graphene oxide modified metakaolin based geopolymer paste

Maosen Li et al.

Summary: The research introduced graphene oxide (GO) to improve the thermal stability of metakaolin (MK) based geopolymer. Results showed that the addition of well-dispersed GO can effectively prevent cracks in geopolymer caused by high temperature, thus enhancing its strength under high temperature conditions.

Water absorption behavior of hydrophobized concrete using silane emulsion as admixture

Chaoyang Zhang et al.

Summary: The influences of silane emulsion as a hydrophobic agent on the pore structure, compressive strength, and water absorption behavior of hardened cement paste were studied. The results showed that silane slightly inhibited cement hydration and reduced the compressive strength of concrete. However, silane significantly decreased the water sorptivity of concrete due to the hydrophobization of capillary walls in hardened cement paste.

Properties and microstructure of self-waterproof metakaolin geopolymer with silane coupling agents

Bowen Feng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of different silane coupling agents and dosages on the waterproof performance of metakaolin-based geopolymer. The results showed that an appropriate dosage of silane coupling agents could significantly reduce water absorption and porosity, while enhancing water resistance and contact angle. The performance of KH560-modified geopolymer was better than that of KH550-modified geopolymer. The incorporation of silane coupling agents hardly destroyed the main crystal structure of geopolymer.

Zeolitic imidazolate framework nanoleaves (ZIF-L) enhancement of strength and durability of portland cement composites

Ezzatollah Shamsaei et al.

Summary: Introducing ZIF-L into cement can enhance hydration and microstructure, leading to increased early compressive strength and improved resistance to water ingress and acid attack in cement composites. The initial set retardation effect followed by improved hydration degree is attributed to the adsorption of Ca2+ onto ZIF-L.

Evolution of tricalcium silicate (C3S) hydration based on image analysis of microstructural observations obtained via Field's metal intrusion

Yanming Liu et al.

Summary: This study focused on the detailed microstructural analysis of the hydration process of C3S, a simplified model of cementitious material. It was found that the length of a metastable barrier in the BSE images correlated well with the hydration rate of C3S, and the hydration process caused significant changes in the pore size and profile of C3S pastes, with the critical pore size for limiting hydration identified as 4 μm. Additionally, C3S samples were observed to reach 80% hydration at 7 days, with continuous development of pore structure thereafter despite similar porosity and hydration levels.

Properties and reaction mechanism of phosphoric acid activated metakaolin geopolymer at varied curing temperatures

Hui Lin et al.

Summary: The reaction mechanism of phosphoric activated metakaolin was studied by controlling curing temperature and phosphoric acid concentration, resulting in silico-aluminate phosphate samples with high compressive strength. Intermediate products such as P-O-P units were observed during the reaction process, leading to the formation of Al-O-P structure in the final products.

Effect of silane coupling agent on the rheological and mechanical properties of alkali-activated ultrafine metakaolin based geopolymers

Gaoshang Ouyang et al.

Summary: This study explores the fluidity modification of geopolymer without changing its compositions. By optimizing the oxides molar ratios and studying the influence of silane coupling agent (SCA), it was found that a specific ratio led to the best fluidity and compressive strength. Addition of an appropriate amount of SCA can decrease viscosity and increase fluidity, while excess SCA has negative effects.
