Immobilization and recycling of contaminated marine sediments in cement-based materials incorporating iron-biochar composites

Qiming Wang et al.

Summary: Sustainable stabilization/solidification (S/S) incorporating iron-biochar composites derived from incinerated sewage sludge ash (ISSA) and peanut shell can significantly enhance the immobilization efficacy of Cr while maintaining similar immobilization efficiencies for As and Cu compared to the control group. The S/S products with the addition of ISSA derived iron-biochar composite exhibit higher mechanical strength.

In-situ X-ray tomographic imaging of microstructure evolution of fly ash and slag particles in alkali-activated fly ash-slag paste

Guohao Fang et al.

Summary: The in-situ investigation using X-ray microcomputed tomography revealed that the dissolution of fly ash and slag particles in alkaliactivated fly ash-slag paste is not uniform. Smaller particles dissolve faster due to their relatively high specific area. The formation of reaction products mostly accumulates within the boundary of original particles, serving as a barrier to prevent further dissolution. The interaction between fly ash and slag in terms of microstructure evolution becomes more apparent at later ages.

Evaluation of thermal properties of phase change material-integrated artificial stone according to biochar loading content

Young Uk Kim et al.

Summary: The strength performance of specimens was slightly degraded when 6% biochar was incorporated, while biochar use within 4% yielded similar or higher strength results. Moreover, the thermal conductivity decreased as the amount of biochar in the mixture increased; these thermal conductivity characteristics depended on the pore characteristics of the biochar type.

Nanoindentation on micromechanical properties and microstructure of geopolymer with nano-SiO2 and nano-TiO2

Zhiyu Luo et al.

Summary: The addition of nano-SiO2 and nano-TiO2 particles in fly ash-based geopolymers improved compressive strength and micro mechanical properties of N-A-S-H gels. Nano-SiO2 had a greater impact on macro-strength, while nano-TiO2 significantly enhanced gel micro-mechanical properties. Both nanoparticles showed a positive effect on the early reaction rate of geopolymers.

Preferred orientation of calcium aluminosilicate hydrate compacts: Implications for creep and indentation

Jiaqi Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the preferred orientation of calcium aluminosilicate hydrate, portlandite, and ettringite in cement-based materials under deviatoric stress, and found that pressure, humidity, and compacting pressure can affect the orientation. The results showed that pressure-induced time-dependent preferential re-orientation of crystallites may contribute to the creep of cement-based materials.

Investigation on effect of nanosilica dispersion on the properties and microstructures of fly ash-based geopolymer composite

Zhiyu Luo et al.

Summary: Different dispersion levels of nanoparticles in nanosilica-geopolymer composites were studied for their physical and gel properties. Ultrasonic dispersion for 20 and 120 minutes led to additional strength enhancement and increased elastic modulus of the N-A-S-H gel. Better dispersed nanoparticles resulted in densified microstructures, improved bonding behaviors, and enhanced micro and macro mechanical properties.

Nanoscratch on mechanical properties of interfacial transition zones (ITZs) in fly ash-based geopolymer composites

Wengui Li et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the mechanical properties of ITZ and geopolymer paste by using regular aggregates to prepare modelled geopolymer composites, revealing the differences between them under different silica modulus conditions. Nanoscratch technique is adopted for a quick scan of long distances, providing stable results with a given number of test data. Deconvolution analysis shows that abnormal properties of paste in geopolymer with a silica modulus of 1.0 could be related to defects.
