The role of calcium crosslinking and glycerol plasticizing on the physical and mechanical properties of superabsorbent Alginate/Quince Seed Gum films

Amir Abbas Abedini et al.

Summary: Highly absorbent films based on alginate and Quince Seed Gum (QSG) were fabricated using ionic crosslinking. Tensile tests showed that crosslinking time and CaCl2 concentration affected the mechanical properties of the films, while glycerol had a limited effect. The swelling test demonstrated that the optimal crosslinking condition resulted in a high swelling degree due to the hydrophilic groups on QSG and repulsion forces between biopolymers. The addition of glycerol affected the contact angle, solubility, and water vapor transmission (WVT) of the films. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed that crosslinking improved the thermal stability, but glycerol had a negative effect. These alginate-QSG films are promising for biomedical applications like wound healing and drug delivery.

Development of Cellulose Nanofibril/Casein-Based 3D Composite Hemostasis Scaffold for Potential Wound-Healing Application

Santosh Shivaji Biranje et al.

Summary: In this study, a 3D composite scaffold was designed using bioprinting technology and synergistic hemostasis mechanisms of cellulose nanofibrils (TCNFs), chitosan, and casein to control blood loss in traumatic hemorrhage. The 3D composite scaffold showed better swelling behavior, faster blood clotting rate, and higher efficiencies for red blood cell entrapping compared to other materials. It also promoted the growth and proliferation of fibroblast cells and demonstrated potential for biodegradation. This study suggests the potential application of 3D composite scaffolds in reducing blood loss during traumatic hemorrhage.

Summary: The research presents a method for preparing, printing, and curing antibacterial poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) nanocellulose-reinforced hydrogels with an anisotropic microstructure to control mechanical properties. Incorporating nanoparticles allows for modifying strength and swelling direction, creating a fourth-dimensional property. Control over anisotropic swelling properties enables complex three-dimensional structures with programmable actuation.
