Multilayer photonic films based on interlocked chiral-nematic cellulose nanocrystals in starch/chitosan

Amin Babaei-Ghazvini et al.

Summary: This study investigated a new approach to utilize and control cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) chiral nematic structure as a biodegradable, intelligent material, producing films with potential applications ranging from UV protective packaging to biomedical uses. The addition of a CNC layer into the cross-linked starch/chitosan structure significantly decreased the water vapor permeability (WVP) of the produced films, with different WVP values observed for different helical pitches of the CNC layer. The outer layer of starch/chitosan also exhibited remarkable antibacterial properties against various bacteria strains, which could be beneficial for biomedical applications or antibacterial packaging.

Spray drying of non-chemically prepared nanofibrillated cellulose: Improving water redispersibility of the dried product

Sirada Sungsinchai et al.

Summary: By examining strategies to improve the water redispersibility of spray dried nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC), this study found that the use of gum Arabic and xanthan gum as co-carriers effectively prevented NFC agglomeration during spray drying. The reconstituted NFC/co-carriers suspensions exhibited shear-thinning and gel-like behaviors, making them suitable as thickener and emulsifier. The SD-NFC/GA20XG suspension showed the highest viscosity and best recovery of NFC's viscous characteristics. SD-NFC/GA20XG also resulted in the smoothest mouth feel and easiest swallowing. Furthermore, the use of reconstituted SD-NFC/GA20XG as an emulsifier achieved the highest stability for oil-in-water Pickering emulsion during storage.

Rate-Limited Reaction in TEMPO/Laccase/O2 Oxidation of Cellulose

Jie Jiang et al.

Summary: The oxidation of cellulose by the TEMPO/laccase/O-2 system is an alternative method for producing cellulose nanofibers with potential. The concentration of TEMPO significantly impacts the oxidation efficiency, and increasing TEMPO concentration and extending oxidation time can enhance the oxidation effect. Different pH conditions affect the oxidation rate of TEMPO by laccase, with laccase showing higher activity at pH 4.5. TEMPO is primarily regenerated through a comproportionation reaction between oxoammonium and hydroxylamine.

Assembling Native Elementary Cellulose Nanofibrils via a Reversible and Regioselective Surface Functionalization

Marco Beaumont et al.

Summary: Selective surface modification of biobased fibers allows for individualization and functionalization into nanomaterials using TEMPO-mediated oxidation, but can lead to changes in native surface chemistry. A methodology is introduced to extract cellulose fibrils with regioselective surface modification, which can be reverted with mild post-treatment, without polymer degradation or changes in crystallinity. This offers significant potential in reconstituting the chemical and structural interfaces of native states for sustainable building blocks.
