Advancing bio-based materials for sustainable solutions to food packaging

Blaise L. L. Tardy et al.

Summary: The accumulation of plastic waste poses a serious threat to the environment, and current recycling efforts are insufficient. Sustainable materials, such as bioproducts, are being researched as replacements for synthetic plastics, but commercialization is hindered by knowledge gaps. The food-packaging sector can serve as a blueprint for the adoption of bioproducts in other industries.

Lactic acid conversion into acrylic acid and other products over natural and synthetic zeolite catalysts: theoretical and experimental studies

Natalia Sobu et al.

Summary: In this study, a theoretical and experimental approach for the production of acrylic acid from lactic acid using various zeolite catalysts was designed. The synthetic BEA and natural clinoptilolite CLI zeolites modified with metals (Sn, Co, Cu, and Fe) were prepared using an ion exchange method. The results showed that the metal M-O-M dimers were stable above oxygen bound with aluminum centers of the BEA and CLI zeolites. The investigated catalysts exhibited trends in the formation of by-products such as acrylic acid, pyruvic acid, 2,3-pentanedione, and acetaldehyde.

Fundamental aspects of the non-covalent modification of cellulose via polymer adsorption

Vishnu Arumughan et al.

Summary: This review article discusses the non-covalent modification of cellulose fibers through the adsorption of functional polymers, focusing on fundamental aspects of polymer adsorption on cellulose surfaces. The correlation of adsorption findings with the Scheutjens-Fleer polymer adsorption theory provides insight into the phenomenon and its context in utilizing cellulose fibers. Studies on model surfaces and cellulose macro-fibers are reviewed to understand the potential of using this approach for tailored material properties.

Toward petroleum-free with plant-based chemistry

Farid Chemat et al.

Summary: The depletion of fossil resources, global warming, and the increasing world's population pose significant threats to humanity, which can be mitigated by producing plant-based chemicals. This approach, leveraging the biodiversity on Earth, has the potential to provide sustainable resources for industry. To address the longstanding challenge of converting plant biomass into usable products, a conceptual leap in research is urgently needed. Transitioning to plant-based green chemistry offers a way to combat climate change and establish a circular bio-based economy in line with Sustainable Development Goals.

Entropy drives the adsorption of xyloglucan to cellulose surfaces-A molecular dynamics study

Saina Kishani et al.

Summary: This study investigated the thermodynamics of the adsorption of xyloglucan (XG) to cellulose surfaces at different temperatures using molecular dynamics simulations. The results showed that adsorption near room temperature is an endothermic process driven by the entropy of released interfacial water molecules. In the case of native cellulose, adsorption became exothermic at higher temperatures, while the interactions between water and charged groups of oxidized cellulose hindered this transition.

Modification of cellulose through physisorption of cationic bio-based nanolatexes - comparing emulsion polymerization and RAFT-mediated polymerization-induced self-assembly

Alexandros E. Alexakis et al.

Summary: The polymerization of a bio-based terpene-derived monomer, Sobrerol methacrylate (SobMA), was evaluated in the design of polymeric nanoparticles (nanolatexes), which were successfully synthesized using emulsion polymerization techniques. By tuning the length of the hydrophobic polymer, nanoparticle size could be controlled, and SobMA was also copolymerized with butyl methacrylate (BMA) to create soft-core nanolatexes with different kinetic profiles.
