Hyperglycemic environment disrupts phosphate transporter function and promotes calcification processes in podocytes and isolated glomeruli

Tomasz Kulesza et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that the expression and activity of phosphate transporters in podocytes were altered under high glucose conditions, leading to an increase in phosphate generation and a decrease in extracellular pyrophosphate concentration. These changes may contribute to the development of glomerular calcification.

Enhancement of cGMP-dependent pathway activity ameliorates hyperglycemia-induced decrease in SIRT1-AMPK activity in podocytes: Impact on glucose uptake and podocyte function

Dorota Rogacka et al.

Summary: Hyperglycemia decreases cGMP-dependent pathway activity in the kidney, leading to impaired podocyte function. However, enhancing cGMP-dependent pathway activity can improve SIRT1-AMPK crosstalk and enhance podocyte function. Therefore, SIRT1-AMPK crosstalk plays an important role in regulating hyperglycemia-associated albumin permeability.

Involvement of nitric oxide synthase/nitric oxide pathway in the regulation of SIRT1-AMPK crosstalk in podocytes: Impact on glucose uptake

Dorota Rogacka et al.

Summary: In hyperglycemic conditions, the interaction between the protein deacetylase SIRT1 and adenosine monophosphate-dependent protein kinase (AMPK) in glomerular podocytes is altered. Modulating the NO synthase (NOS) / NO pathway can improve SIRT1 and AMPK activity, consequently enhancing glucose uptake.
