Review of food upcycling in South Korea: regulation, limitation, and prospects

Sang-Oh Kim

Summary: This review discusses examples, regulations, limitations, and prospects of food upcycling in South Korea. Various examples of food upcycling have been reported, but it faces limitations in terms of microbiological and chemical risks, as well as marketability. However, companies are expected to actively engage in upcycling of by-products in line with the ESG trends, and the government should strengthen related regulations.

SARS-CoV-2-Induced TSLP Is Associated with Duration of Hospital Stay in COVID-19 Patients

Luke Gerla et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine whether TSLP levels increase in COVID-19 patients and if SARS-CoV-2 induces TSLP expression in bronchial epithelial cells. The results showed increased TSLP levels in the plasma of hospitalized COVID-19 patients, which correlated with duration of hospitalization. In vitro infection of bronchial epithelial cells with SARS-CoV-2 also resulted in elevated TSLP levels. Therefore, TSLP may be considered an important therapeutic target for COVID-19 treatment.

Intronic regulation of SARS-CoV-2 receptor (ACE2) expression mediated by immune signaling and oxidative stress pathways

Daniel Richard et al.

Summary: This study makes use of bioinformatic analysis to propose hypotheses for ACE2 gene regulation and validates these hypotheses through functional experiments. It identifies regulatory elements associated with immune signaling and oxidative stress pathways. The findings contribute to our understanding of ACE2 gene regulation under normal conditions and immune challenges, supporting further research on these regulatory mechanisms in the context of current and future SARS-related virus infection/disease.

Pathophysiology of Post-COVID syndromes: a new perspective

Gaber El-Saber Batiha et al.

Summary: Most COVID-19 patients recover with low mortality, but some may experience long-term symptoms known as long-COVID or Post-COVID syndrome (PCS). These symptoms, including dyspnea, fatigue, myalgia, insomnia, cognitive and olfactory disorders, can persist for months in some patients and may be associated with the development of mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS). Women and those with a history of neuropsychiatric disorders are more prone to developing PCS. High levels of D-dimer and blood urea nitrogen are risk factors for pulmonary dysfunction in COVID-19 survivors with PCS. The development of PCS may be influenced by persistent inflammatory reactions, autoimmune mimicry, reactivation of pathogens, and alterations in the host microbiome. The deregulated release of inflammatory mediators in MCAS leads to the extraordinary symptoms in PCS patients. MCAS is treated with antihistamines, inhibition of mediators synthesis and release, and inhibition of mast cell degranulation.

Contributions of human ACE2 and TMPRSS2 in determining host-pathogen interaction of COVID-19

Sabyasachi Senapati et al.

Summary: The ACE2 and TMPRSS2 play crucial roles in the virulence and pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2, with the interaction between them and the virus's S-protein being key in COVID-19 susceptibility. Identification of specific protein-protein interactions and potential drug targets for inhibiting these interactions could aid in the development of anti-COVID-19 drugs.

Chloroquine attenuates thymic stromal lymphopoietin production via suppressing caspase-1 signaling in mast cells

Na-Ra Han et al.

Summary: Chloroquine (CQ) exhibits anti-inflammatory effects by modulating TSLP levels in mast cells and reducing ear edema thickness, as well as TSLP levels in ear tissue and serum. The down-regulation of CASP1, NF-kappa B, and other signaling cascades by CQ contributes to its protective role against TSLP-mediated inflammatory disorders.

Mast cell activation symptoms are prevalent in Long-COVID

Leonard B. Weinstock et al.

Summary: This study found that MCA symptoms were increased in LC patients after COVID-19 and mimicked the symptoms and severity reported by MCAS patients. This suggests that increased activation of aberrant mast cells induced by SARS-CoV-2 infection may underlie part of the pathophysiology of LC.

Mast cells: Therapeutic targets for COVID-19 and beyond

Hiu Yan Lam et al.

Summary: Mast cells, as innate immune cells with unique features, play sentinel roles in response to rapid changes within their microenvironment and are increasingly recognized for their involvement in various pathophysiological processes, including COVID-19. This review highlights the emerging roles of mast cells in the pathogenesis of COVID-19 and the potential of mast cells as novel therapeutic targets for COVID-19 and other non-allergic inflammatory diseases.
