Potential Pro-Tumorigenic Effect of Bisphenol A in Breast Cancer via Altering the Tumor Microenvironment

Youngjoo Kwon

Summary: Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical used in the production of plastics and has the ability to mimic estrogen. In addition to promoting the growth of breast cancer cells, recent studies have suggested that BPA can alter the tumor microenvironment (TME) and potentially contribute to breast cancer development. Understanding the effects of BPA on the TME is crucial for assessing the risk of breast cancer.

Hormone receptor expression in aging mammary tissue and carcinoma from a rodent model after xenoestrogen disruption

Thalles Fernando Rocha Ruiz et al.

Summary: This study used Mongolian gerbils as an experimental model to investigate the effects of exposure to BPA during pregnancy and lactation on the hormone receptor status in aged female individuals. The results showed that BPA exposure led to increased expression of ER alpha and decreased expression of ER beta, PR, and PRL-R, with an association between enhanced EZH2 expression and poor cancer prognosis, indicating a potential role of BPA in promoting tumorigenesis through HER2/ErbB2.

Inflammatory repercussions in female steroid responsive glands after perinatal exposure to bisphenol A and 17-β estradiol

Ellen Cristina Rivas Leonel et al.

Summary: The study evaluated inflammatory responses of the mammary gland and prostate to BPA and estradiol exposure, finding an increase in phospho-STAT3 positive cells and macrophages in the prostate of animals exposed to BPA, while the mammary gland did not show differences in inflammatory markers. The findings suggest that exposure to endocrine disruptors during the perinatal period leads to different inflammatory responses in reproductive organs, with the prostate being more susceptible to inflammatory mechanisms.

Mammary carcinoma in aged gerbil mothers after endocrine disruption in pregnancy and lactation

Thalles Fernando Rocha Ruiz et al.

Summary: Exposure to BPA during gestational and lactational phases in aged Mongolian gerbil mothers leads to disruption of mammary tissue, development of carcinoma, and formation of a tumoral microenvironment.

What Does CLARITY-BPA Mean for Canadians?

Lindsay D. Rogers

Summary: Bisphenol A is widely used in polycarbonate plastics, food and beverage tins linings, and shopping receipts. Research shows that exposure at environmentally relevant doses causes endocrine disruption. Therefore, there is a need for revised risk assessments in Canada.
