Effects of photoperiod and temperature on kisspeptin1 (kiss1) expression in the gonads of Clarias batrachus

Summary: Photo-thermal cues relayed to the brain centers activate the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis to secrete sex steroids in vertebrates. GnRH is a pivotal regulator of reproduction, and recent studies have identified kiss as an upstream regulator of GnRH. This study examines the regulation of kiss1 expression in fish gonads during the reproductive cycle, revealing that long photoperiod and high temperature significantly stimulate kiss1 expression, while short photoperiod and low temperature suppress its expression. The combination of long photoperiod and high temperature amplifies the stimulatory role in kiss1 expression and also increases steroid levels and gametogenesis in the gonads.

Seasonal expression and distribution of kisspeptin1 (kiss1) in the ovary and testis of freshwater catfish, Clarias batrachus: A putative role in steroidogenesis

Summary: This study investigated the presence of kisspeptin in the gonadal cells of the freshwater catfish and its role in the regulation of steroidogenesis. The results showed that kisspeptin plays a role in accelerating gametogenic processes by affecting the production of 17 beta-estradiol and testosterone in the ovary and testis of the catfish, respectively. Additionally, the study found that kisspeptin receptor antagonist treatment led to a decrease in activities of key enzymes involved in steroid hormone production and arrested the progression of oogenesis and spermatogenesis in the treated catfish.
