A large but transient carbon sink from urbanization and rural depopulation in China

Xiaoxin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study tests the hypothesis that urbanization and carbon neutrality are not mutually exclusive, and that sustainably managed urbanization could increase carbon sequestration. The results show that urban greening compensates for initial carbon losses caused by urban expansion, and rural areas experiencing depopulation coincide with extensive aboveground carbon sinks. However, the capacity for carbon removal by forests is limited, and reducing CO2 emissions from fossil fuel burning is necessary to achieve carbon neutrality.

Spatial variability of epikarst thickness and its controlling factors in a dolomite catchment

Summary: This study investigated the spatial variability of epikarst thickness in Huanjiang, Guangxi, China. The results showed that epikarst thickness was thicker in depression areas compared to hill slopes, and soil properties were found to be a better predictor for epikarst thickness than terrain-vegetation variables.

Influence of geological structure on the physicochemical properties and occurrence of middle-deep groundwater in Chongqing, Southwest China

Jieru Zhang et al.

Summary: Chongqing Municipality, located in the Sichuan marine sedimentary basin, was studied to understand the occurrence and hydrochemical evolution of middle-deep groundwater. The study revealed that the groundwater system in the area is still in the process of formation and is diluted by rainwater.

Response of surface evaporation and subsurface leakage to precipitation for simulated epikarst with different rock-soil structures

Jia Chen et al.

Summary: Karst water is a crucial resource and its hydrological processes are greatly influenced by the rock-soil structure. This study investigated the evaporation and leakage in lysimeters representing different rock-soil structures. The results indicated that rock exposure rate and cracks had a larger impact on hydrological processes compared to soil thickness. These findings provide valuable scientific references for water use and management in karst areas.

Water uptake depth is coordinated with leaf water potential, water-use efficiency and drought vulnerability in karst vegetation

Yali Ding et al.

Summary: Access to bedrock water storage is crucial for plant survival in seasonally dry environments, but the relationship between water uptake depth, leaf-level water-use efficiency, and water potential in drought-prone plant communities is not well understood. This study found that species with shallower water uptake and lower WUEi were more vulnerable to drought-induced canopy defoliation and mortality, while species with deeper water uptake and higher WUEi were able to survive with only moderate canopy defoliation. Environmental filtering and/or selective pressures lead to tight coordination between tree diameter, water uptake depth, isohydric behavior, WUEi, and drought vulnerability in karst plant communities.

Effectiveness of a soil mapping geomatic approach to predict the spatial distribution of soil types and their properties

Costanza Calzolari et al.

Summary: A cost-effective GIS approach was used to produce a soil map (1:50,000 scale) in Sardinia, Italy, and the effectiveness of this method in representing and predicting the spatial distribution of soil types and properties was verified. The study found that landforms and parent materials influenced the distribution of soil types and properties, with terrain attributes impacting soil depth and available water capacity. The study also calibrated models to predict the composition of map units in terms of different soil groups, showing more reliability in predicting the absence rather than presence of specific soil types.

Karst ecosystem and environment: Characteristics, evolution processes, and sustainable development

Summary: The studies in this Special Issue focused on environmental and ecological issues in karst areas of Southwest China, indicating improved ecosystem and environment due to active agricultural practices. Local farmers and government are now more aware of the importance of environmental protection and ecosystem conservation, potentially driving future sustainable development goals. Further research is needed to enhance the resilience of soil and water resources in the fragile karst ecosystem to support agricultural development.

Aggravated risk of soil erosion with global warming - A global meta-analysis

Xiaofei Ma et al.

Summary: Climate warming has a variable impact on global soil erosion, with an overall increase observed primarily in semiarid areas. Different soil erosion models yield significantly different simulation results, with the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation and Wind Erosion Equation models showing the highest accuracy for water and wind erosion simulations. The driving factors behind soil erosion under climate warming are still uncertain and further research is needed to study the interactions between climate warming and soil erosion, especially in wind erosion models, as well as consider the relationship between the UN Sustainable Development Goals and soil erosion.
