Microbial dynamics and activity of denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidizers in China's estuarine and coastal wetlands

Yuhui Niu et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant spatiotemporal variation in the distribution of DAMO microorganisms in estuarine and coastal ecosystems, with DAMO bacteria and archaea showing close cooperation in completing nitrate elimination. Potential DAMO rates were higher in warmer low-latitudes, but microbial activity could not be predicted solely by gene abundance. The heterogeneous variability of DAMO was influenced by key environmental characteristics such as sediment texture, nitrogen availability, temperature, and salinity.

Fe(III)-mediated anaerobic ammonium oxidation: A novel microbial nitrogen cycle pathway and potential applications

Xin Tan et al.

Summary: Feammox is a novel pathway for ammonium (NH4 (+)) oxidation and nitrogen cycle, leading to significant loss of nitrogen in natural environments. Various Feammox pathways, end products, and interactions within microbial communities have been revealed by researchers, offering alternative processes for wastewater treatment. However, substantial variations exist among different studies in terms of key functional microorganisms.

N2O emission dynamics along an intertidal elevation gradient in a subtropical estuary: Importance of N2O consumption

Dengzhou Gao et al.

Summary: Studying N2O production and consumption processes along an intertidal elevation gradient can improve the understanding of N2O dynamics among coastal wetlands. The results showed that N2O emission rates were higher in high tidal zones compared to middle and low tidal zones. Gross N2O production and consumption rates were greater in high and low tidal zones, whereas N2O consumption proportions generally increased from high to low tidal zones. Bacterial denitrification was the dominant pathway, although NH2OH oxidation/fungal denitrification also contributed substantially to N2O production in high tidal flats. Changes in N2O dynamics along the elevation gradient were affected by carbon and nitrogen substrate availabilities as well as the redox environments.

Crab bioturbation alters nitrogen cycling and promotes nitrous oxide emission in intertidal wetlands: Influence and microbial mechanism

Zhirui An et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the bioturbation of crabs can accelerate microbial-driven nitrogen cycling in intertidal wetlands, increasing the potential rates of the main N2O production pathways. Crab bioturbation leads to higher N2O emission rates, mainly due to a disproportionate increase in N2O production over N2O consumption. Additionally, the sources of N2O are significantly affected by crab bioturbation.

Microbial abundance and activity of nitrite/nitrate-dependent anaerobic methane oxidizers in estuarine and intertidal wetlands: Heterogeneity and driving factors

Feiyang Chen et al.

Summary: The study revealed the distribution pattern and controlling factors of nitrite/nitrate-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-DAMO) bioprocesses in estuarine and intertidal marshes. It showed that Candidatus 'Methylomirabilis oxyfera'-like DAMO bacteria and Candidatus 'Methanoperedens nitroreducens'-like DAMO archaea cooccurred, with higher abundance of the M. oxyfera-like bacteria and a positive correlation with sediment pH and ammonium content.

Nitrogen loads alter the N2 production between denitrification and anammox in Min River Estuary, a highly impacted estuary in southeast China

Xiaofei Li et al.

Summary: Estuarine sediment denitrification and anammox in response to increased nitrogen loads were investigated using a N isotope tracer approach. The study found that denitrification and anammox rates varied along the estuary, with different controls on the partitioning of N2 production. NH4+ and NOx were identified as crucial predictors for the partitioning between denitrification and anammox.

Biogeochemical cycling of iron (hydr-)oxides and its impact on organic carbon turnover in coastal wetlands: A global synthesis and perspective

Changxun Yu et al.

Summary: Coastal wetlands are important reservoirs of organic carbon and various iron (hydr-)oxides, which are closely linked to the turnover of organic carbon in these ecosystems. The distribution of Fe (hydr-)oxides in coastal wetland soils is influenced by regional hydro-geochemical processes and anthropogenic activities, while the activities of plant roots and macro-organisms play a critical role in the formation and turnover of Fe (hydr-)oxides. The interaction between Fe plaques dominated by amorphous Fe hydroxides and wetland plant roots contributes to maintaining plant productivity in coastal wetlands under different environmental stresses.

Nitrogen loss through denitrification, anammox and Feammox in a paddy soil

Bangjing Ding et al.

Summary: The study investigated the distribution of nitrogen loss pathways in different layers of paddy soil in southeastern China, revealing differences in the activities of anammox and Feammox in different soil layers. Denitrification was identified as the main nitrogen loss pathway in the surface soil, while Feammox became significant in the 20-40 cm depth.

Effects of Soil pH on Gaseous Nitrogen Loss Pathway via Feammox Process

Ding Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of soil pH on Feammox pathways and microbial communities, revealing significant differences in gaseous N loss pathways under different pH conditions, with Feammox to N-2 being the predominant pathway at low pH. Fe-reducing bacteria such as Ochrobactrum, Sphingomonas, and Clostridium increased significantly in lower pH incubations.
