Slope position and biochar influence soil properties and seed displacement in a tropical agroecosystem

Jean-Louis Janeau et al.

Summary: Soil erosion caused by land use change is a major issue in agricultural areas. This study conducted an in-field experiment in Northern Thailand to examine the effects of catena position and biochar use on seed displacement, soil loss, and nutrient losses. The results showed that catena position and biochar had an impact on runoff, soil and nutrient losses. The reappearance of biochar at the soil surface and its effects on runoff, nutrient concentration, and seed displacement were also observed. The study highlights the differences in soil surface features and runoff along the catena under tropical climate and steep slope conditions, and suggests considering catena position for improving soil management and adopting appropriate agroecological practices.

Effect of raindrop splashes on topsoil structure and infiltration characteristics

Gangan Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of raindrop splashing on the topsoil structure and infiltration capacity of Lou soil on the Loess Plateau. The results indicate that raindrop splashing alters the topsoil structure, reducing pore volume and macroporosity, and forming a dense crust that decreases infiltration capacity.

The effects of slope and fertilizer rates on nitrogen losses in runoff from red soil and paddy soil during simulated rainfall

Ying Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the forms of nitrogen lost, the first flush effect, and the relationships between nitrogen losses and rainfall, runoff duration, slope gradients, and fertilizer rates on red soils and paddy soils. The results showed significant differences in cumulative rainfall required to generate runoff for different slope gradients and the ratio of NH4+-N/TN and NO3--N/TN varied with fertilizer N levels. A model was established to simulate the processes driving TN losses under different conditions. The findings contribute to understanding and mitigating agricultural diffuse pollution.

Splash erosion affected by initial soil moisture and surface conditions under simulated rainfall

Nives Zambon et al.

Summary: Splash erosion is the initial stage of soil erosion by water and is affected by soil initial water content and surface condition. Wet-sealed soil samples have significantly lower splash erosion rates compared to air-dried samples, due to surface ponding leading to seal formation. Different rainfall simulators produce varying amounts of splash erosion rates.
