Synergistic effect of graphene and β-Si3N4 whisker enables Si3N4 ceramic composites to obtain ultra-low friction coefficient

Fei Chen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to enhance the tribological properties of Si3N4-based ceramics by introducing beta-Si3N4 whisker into MLG/Si3N4 ceramics. The addition of beta-Si3N4w significantly reduced the coefficient of friction and improved the wear resistance of the composites.

Inverse Relationship between Thickness and Wear of Fluorinated Graphene: Thinner Is Better

Yangqin Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the wear resistance of fluorinated graphene (FG) nanosheets on silicon surfaces using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results show that the wear resistance of FG improves as the thickness decreases and the surface energy of the substrate increases. Density function theory (DFT) calculations reveal that this can be explained by the degree of interfacial charge transfer, which affects the adhesion strength between FG and the substrate.

Understanding of the lubrication mechanism of reduced graphene oxide coating via dual in-situ monitoring of the chemical and topographic structural evolution

Yuzhen Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel method was employed to investigate the evolutions of tribological, topographical, and microstructural characteristics of the rGO coating during the sliding process, using a tribo-tester instrumented with 3D laser microscopy and micro-Raman spectrometer. The tribological properties of the rGO coating were found to be affected by the morphology and microstructure of the rGO on the wear track, with the failure mechanism attributed to the processes of formation, removal, and re-deposition of rGO-based tribofilm. Furthermore, it was determined that variations in the morphology and chemical structure of the wear track were synchronous in certain sliding stages.

Macroscale superlubricity of Si-doped diamond-like carbon film enabled by graphene oxide as additives

Shuang Yi et al.

Summary: Graphene oxide nanosheets as additives in ethylene glycol can achieve an extremely low coefficient of friction on silicon-doped hydrogenated amorphous carbon film. Tribochemical reactions lead to the formation of a silica colloid layer, while physical adsorption of GO nanosheets reduces shear stress by transferring the shear plane. The synergistic lubrication effect of a-C:H:Si and GO nanosheets is established to design superlubricity at macroscale.
