Outstanding platinum group metal-free bifunctional catalysts for rechargeable zinc-air batteries

Kaur Muuli et al.

Summary: In this study, Fe-N-C catalysts were prepared at a kilogram scale using the commercial VariPoreTM method, and the effect of synthesis conditions on the catalyst performance at ZAB air electrode was investigated. The results showed that the PA-450-HT catalyst exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and was the most suitable catalyst for primary ZAB, with a galvanostatic polarization discharge peak power density of 149 mW cm-2, outperforming commercial Pt-Ru/C catalysts. Additionally, the NCB-600-HT catalyst displayed outstanding ORR and OER reversibility, with a half-wave potential of 0.87 V vs. RHE and a Delta E value of 0.81 V, and exhibited excellent charge-discharge cycling durability similar to NCB-550-LT for the secondary ZAB. This study reported for the first time the mass production of outstanding bifunctional Fe-N-C catalysts for rechargeable ZAB.

Oxidation State as a Descriptor in Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysis

Ning Qin et al.

Summary: Electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) play a crucial role in the development of fuel cells and metal-air batteries. In addition to tuning the morphology and defect-active sites, the oxidation state can also be used as a strategy for designing efficient ORR electrocatalysts. By increasing the valence of silver species, their electrocatalytic activities can be improved, and higher valence Ag species possess a higher proportion of d band holes and more electrons closer to the Fermi level, which regulates the oxygen adsorption and activation energy on the Ag sites to enhance the ORR catalytic efficiency.

Highly active sites of low spin FeIIN4 species: The identification and the ORR performance

Huizhu Cai et al.

Summary: This study synthesized Fe3C/C and Fe2N/C samples, and identified single sites of FeN4 species in the Fe2N/C sample after acid leaching, serving as an ideal model for identification of catalytic functions of single sites of FeN4 in ORR. A correlation was found between the concentration of low spin (FeN4)-N-II species by Mossbauer spectra and the kinetic current density at 0.8 V in alkaline media, confirming the catalytic roles of low spin (FeN4)-N-II species as highly active sites for ORR.
