Chitosan/hyaluronan nanogels co-delivering methotrexate and 5-aminole-vulinic acid: A combined chemo-photodynamic therapy for psoriasis

Yixuan Wang et al.

Summary: The study fabricated chitosan/hyaluronan nanogels to co-load methotrexate (MTX) and 5-aminoleavulinic acid (ALA) for a combined chemo-photodynamic therapy for psoriasis. The nanogels enhanced the penetration and retention of MTX and ALA in the skin, leading to synergistic anti-proliferative and apoptotic effects on psoriatic cells. Importantly, the nanogels reduced the toxicities of oral MTX to the liver and kidney, making it a convenient, effective, and safe treatment strategy for psoriasis.

Victoria O. Fasiku et al.

Summary: The study developed a NO-releasing nanogel for co-delivery of NO and AMPs against bacteria and biofilms. The nanogel showed biocompatibility and sustained NO release. It exhibited broad spectrum antibacterial/antibiofilm activity and had a greater antibacterial effect compared to NO alone. The nanogel loaded with AMP/NO also significantly reduced biofilms compared to only NO.

Enzyme-triggered- and tumor-targeted delivery with tunable, methacrylated poly(ethylene glycols) and hyaluronic acid hybrid nanogels

Wioletta Liwinska et al.

Summary: Enzyme-responsive polymeric-based nanostructures show potential as targeted drug delivery carriers, but their major risks are the fast disassembling of short-lived structures and limited accessibility of the enzyme to internal moieties. A modified environmentally responsive and enzymatically cleavable nanogel carrier was developed, which allowed independent shrinking of different parts of the network and targeted interaction with cellular receptors. Tunable nanogels efficiently stored and triggered the release of doxorubicin and mitoxantrone, with enhanced enzymatic degradation by introducing more hyaluronidase enzyme.

Huu Van Le et al.

Summary: A novel kind of thermoresponsive polyelectrolyte complex-based nanogels (PEC-NGs) were developed by mixing hyaluronic acid functionalized with Jeffamine M-2005 and either DEAE-D or PLL. The presence of M2005 grafts led to PEC-NGs with larger particle size, lower net surface charge, and thermoresponsiveness. Replacing DEAE-D with PLL improved stability against salinity and encapsulation of curcumin.
