Pengqi Wan et al.

Summary: In this study, a photosensitizer-polypeptide conjugate was synthesized for effective antifungal and antibiofilm treatment. The conjugate showed enhanced binding ability to Candida albicans and fluconazole-resistant Candida albicans through electrostatic interactions. It exhibited effective antifungal efficiency and improved penetration in a Candida albicans biofilm, effectively eliminating the biofilm by photodynamic effects. In a fluconazole-resistant Candida albicans-infected rat model, the conjugate demonstrated significantly enhanced therapeutic effects with minimal side effects.

Chitosan Oligosaccharide Attenuates Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Intestinal Barrier Dysfunction through Suppressing the Inflammatory Response and Oxidative Stress in Mice

Wenjing Tao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) has a protective effect against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced intestinal injury. COS improves the mucosal morphology and tight junction protein expressions, increases goblet cells number and mucin expression, up-regulates antimicrobial peptide expressions, decreases pro-inflammatory cytokine production and neutrophil recruitment, and ameliorates intestinal oxidative stress. The beneficial effects of COS on intestinal barrier function are associated with its anti-inflammatory activities and antioxidant capacity.

Structural characterization and antioxidant activity of Polygonatum sibiricum polysaccharides

Shiqiang Wang et al.

Summary: Polysaccharides obtained from Polygonatum sibiricum (PSP) were purified and characterized in this study. The PSP1 sample had the highest content and best solubility. The main sugar residue linkages were identified as 1)-beta-D-Fruf-(2 -> 1)-beta-D-Fruf-(2 -> 1), 1 -> -beta-D-Fruf-(2 -> 6)alpha-D-Glcp (1 ->,-> 4)-beta-D-Manp-(1 -> 4)-beta-D-Manp-(1 -> and -> 6)-beta-D-Glcp-(1 -> 4)-beta-D-Manp-(1 ->. Branch chain analysis revealed the presence of -> 1,6)-beta-D-Fruf-(2 ->, beta-D-Fruf-(2 ->,-> 1,6)-beta-D-Fruf-(2 ->,-> 6)-beta-D-Fruf(2 -> linkages, with the link site at position C-6. In vitro antioxidant activity tests showed that PSP1 had scavenging effects on DPPH, hydroxyl radical, superoxide anion radical, and exhibited a specific chelating ability for ferrous ions. These findings suggest that P. sibiricum polysaccharides may possess potential antioxidant properties.

Candida albicans-The Virulence Factors and Clinical Manifestations of Infection

Jasminka Talapko et al.

Summary: Candida albicans is a common commensal fungus in the human body, which can cause various infections when the balance with the host immune system is disrupted. Factors such as dysbiosis of microbiota, immune dysfunction, and mucosal barrier damage contribute to the transition of C. albicans from a normal flora to a pathogenic state. The presence of C. albicans in the bloodstream can lead to invasive infections.

Antifungal agents and the kidney: pharmacokinetics, clinical nephrotoxicity, and interactions

Athanasios Tragiannidis et al.

Summary: Invasive fungal infections remain a significant concern for severely ill and immunocompromised patients, leading to an increase in research on antifungal drugs. Nephrotoxicity is an important consideration in the use of antifungal agents, particularly for patients with compromised organ functions or receiving other potentially nephrotoxic medications. Amphotericin B deoxycholate is identified as having the highest potential for nephrotoxicity, followed by lipid formulations of amphotericin B and the antifungal triazoles to a much lesser extent.
