A nationwide cohort study of the incidence of inflammatory bowel disease in Sweden from 1990 to 2014

Anders Forss et al.

Summary: The study in Sweden revealed that the incidence of IBD in all subtypes increased from 1990 to 2001, followed by a gradual decline. Incidence rates for IBD, UC, and IBD-U were higher in males, while CD had a higher incidence rate in females. The lifetime risk of being diagnosed with IBD was approximately 2.5% for both sexes.

Incidence trends for twelve cancers in younger adults-a rapid review

Erica di Martino et al.

Summary: This rapid review found that the incidence of colorectal, breast, kidney, pancreas, and uterine cancer is increasing in younger age groups, while the incidence of lung, laryngeal, and bladder cancer is decreasing. However, the data for esophageal, stomach, ovarian cancer, and myeloma were inconclusive. These trends may have implications for updating cancer investigation and referral guidelines.

Practical Considerations in Diagnosing and Managing Early-Onset GI Cancers

Melissa A. Lumish et al.

Summary: The incidence of early-onset gastrointestinal (GI) cancers in young individuals has been increasing rapidly, and its causes and effects on cancer progression and treatment response are still unknown. While there are clinical differences between early-onset GI cancers and average-onset GI cancers, there is no molecular distinction between the two. Further research is needed to understand the pathogenesis and optimal management of early-onset GI cancers, and early biomarkers are necessary for effective screening. Specialized centers can provide comprehensive care for patients with early-onset GI cancers, addressing their unique psychosocial needs.

Increasing Incidence of Advanced Non-cardia Gastric Cancers Among Younger Hispanics in the USA

Zhensheng Wang et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown an increasing trend in non-cardia gastric cancer among non-Hispanic whites aged < 50 years in the USA, with rates of localized disease increasing significantly. Meanwhile, rates of distant stage non-cardia gastric cancer among Hispanics aged < 50 years are also on the rise.

Clinical Presentation Patterns and Survival Outcomes of Hispanic Patients with Gastric Cancer

Gerardo A. Vitiello et al.

Summary: Hispanic patients have a higher incidence of gastric cancer compared to non-Hispanics, often seeking care at safety-net hospitals and being uninsured. They are more likely to have early onset gastric cancer and be diagnosed in the emergency room. Treatment paradigms and survival rates are similar between Hispanic and non-Hispanic patients when considering cancer stage.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Clinical, Molecular and Genetic Characteristics of Early Onset Gastric Cancer: Analysis of a Large Multicenter Study

Anna Pocurull et al.

Summary: Gastric cancer is a common cancer with high mortality rates worldwide, and a small portion of patients known as early onset gastric cancer (EOGC) develop the disease before age 50. The majority of EOGC cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage, have a diffuse type, and lack DNA mismatch repair somatic deficiency. Familial aggregation of gastric cancer is uncommon, but a germline genetic mutation was found in 25% of patients with clinical criteria.

Prevalence of Germline Alterations on Targeted Tumor-Normal Sequencing of Esophagogastric Cancer

Geoffrey Y. Ku et al.

Summary: The study revealed a higher prevalence of pathogenic germline alterations in patients with esophagogastric cancer, particularly in gastric cancer and early-onset cases. This suggests the importance of genetic testing in these populations for identifying potential hereditary cancer syndromes.
