Identifying factors that affect mountain lake sensitivity to atmospheric nitrogen deposition across multiple scales

Benjamin T. Burpee et al.

Summary: Increased nitrogen deposition in North American and European mountain lakes over the past century has had varying ecological impacts due to the local characteristics of the lakes and their watersheds. This study evaluated the sensitivity of mountain lakes to nitrogen deposition and found that it is influenced by factors such as deposition rates and spatial variability. The study also highlighted the importance of conducting subregional analyses to understand the specific predictors of lake sensitivity to nitrogen deposition.

Temporal dynamics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in mountain lakes: the role of catchment characteristics

Mark H. Olson et al.

Summary: Climate change is impacting mountain ecosystems by altering vegetation coverage and meteorological conditions, which in turn affect dissolved organic matter (DOM) inputs to lakes. This study used optical sensors and meteorological data to observe the temporal dynamics of DOM in five lakes. The results showed that DOM dynamics occurred in two phases at seasonal scale, with a decline in the first phase following spring snowmelt, and an increase following precipitation events at shorter time scales. These findings suggest that with increasing vegetation coverage due to climate change, DOM will become more dynamic and consequently affect water transparency and productivity in mountain lakes.
