Projecting environmental and krill fishery impacts on the Antarctic Peninsula food web in 2100

G. Testa et al.

Summary: The Antarctic Peninsula ecosystem is sensitive to climate variability and fisheries activities. Environmental variability has a greater impact on the Antarctic food web compared to the krill fishery. Chlorophyll-a biomass strongly influences the temporal variability of functional groups. A decline in krill population biomass and an increase in other zooplankton groups are expected in the future.

Climate change and the future productivity and distribution of crab in the Bering Sea

Cody Szuwalski et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the productivity and distribution of crab populations in the eastern Bering Sea are closely related to environmental factors, such as the Arctic Oscillation, ice cover, cod biomass, and sea surface temperature. Forecasts suggest that Tanner crab may become more productive and shift further offshore, red king crab distribution may contract and move north, and productivity may decrease for snow crab as the population contracts northward.

Improved Decadal Predictions of North Atlantic Subpolar Gyre SST in CMIP6

Leonard F. Borchert et al.

Summary: The study compares the performance of initialized and uninitialized historical simulations from the CMIP5 and CMIP6 in representing subpolar SST variations since 1960. The results indicate that initialized decadal hindcasts from CMIP6 can explain a large portion of observed SST variance, suggesting a more significant role of forcing in driving subpolar SST changes than previously thought.

Impact of larval behaviors on dispersal and connectivity of sea scallop larvae over the northeast US shelf

Changsheng Chen et al.

Summary: This study examined the dispersion and settlement of sea scallop larvae, showing that larval dispersal is influenced by biophysical interactions and larval behavior in the ocean mixed layer. Additionally, the larval transport is closely related to the intensity and duration of northeasterly winds, with the exception of significant larval transport to the Middle Atlantic Bight in 2009 driven by unusually strong northeasterly winds.

Poleward shifts in marine fisheries under Arctic warming

Summary: As the Arctic warms and sea ice diminishes, trawling activities are rapidly increasing in response, posing potential threats to marine ecosystems in the Arctic Ocean. Governments should take stronger responsibility to regulate fishing activities and protect vulnerable Arctic shelf ecosystems.

Skilful prediction of cod stocks in the North and Barents Sea a decade in advance

Vimal Koul et al.

Summary: In order to provide better decision support, scientists have developed a unified dynamical-statistical prediction system to successfully forecast the biomass of cod stocks in the North and Barents Seas a decade in advance. Retrospective forecasts show differences in the prediction skill of the models, with North Sea cod stock possibly not recovering in the next decade and Northeast Arctic cod stock potentially declining but having a better chance of recovery.
