When large marine predators feed on fisheries catches: Global patterns of the depredation conflict and directions for coexistence

Paul Tixier et al.

Summary: Mitigating human-wildlife conflicts has become a major challenge globally, especially with large marine predators feeding on fisheries catches. Depredation poses threats to the socio-economic viability of fisheries and species conservation, highlighting the need for enhanced mitigation efforts.

Fishing trip cost modeling using generalized linear model and machine learning methods - A case study with longline fisheries in the Pacific and an application in Regulatory Impact Analysis

Hing Ling Chan et al.

Summary: The study introduces a modeling approach using a combination of machine learning techniques and generalized linear models to estimate fishing trip costs for unsampled trips based on sampled trip costs and operational data. This method allows for estimating costs for all trips in the fishery and enables empirical analysis of the impact of spatial management policies on trip costs.

Patterns of depredation in the Hawai'i deep-set longline fishery informed by fishery and false killer whale behavior

Joseph E. Fader et al.

Summary: False killer whales are frequently hooked or entangled in the deep-set longline fishery in Hawai'i, with around 6% of hauls experiencing odontocete depredation. Patterns such as higher rates of depredation in winter and with higher fishing effort were identified, but predictive power was limited. Moving a significant distance or waiting a period of time can reduce the risk of repeated interactions, with the best results achieved by moving around 400 km or waiting around 9 days. It is recommended that fishermen avoid areas of known depredation or bycatch, and communicate these occurrences to other vessels to help reduce the risk in high-risk areas.
