Precursors to large rockslides visible on optical remote-sensing images and their implications for landslide early detection

Weile Li et al.

Summary: This study used satellite and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) optical remote-sensing (ORS) images to track evidence of slope deformation and examine potential geomorphological precursors of five large rockslides in China. The results showed that cracks, scarps, and rockfalls can be identified in ORS images taken several years or decades before the rapid slope failure, providing sufficient time for early detection of landslides.

Effect of root orientation on the strength characteristics of loess in drained and undrained triaxial tests

Jiang Yuan-jun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of Cunninghamia R. Br roots on the mechanical behavior of loess soil. The results show that the addition of roots increases the shear strength of the soil, provides additional resistance to volumetric deformations, and increases the positive excess pore water pressure. The mechanical response of the soil-root composite depends on the type of root orientation, with the horizontal-vertical (grid) root orientation showing the highest shear strength improvement. The findings of this research will contribute to the development of a predictive constitutive model for soil-root composite.

Effects of compaction state on desiccation cracking behaviour of a clayey soil subjected to wetting-drying cycles

Ben-Gang Tian et al.

Summary: Desiccation cracks in clayey soils are affected by compaction water content and dry density. The development of desiccation cracks varies depending on the compaction state, with cracks forming simultaneously or sequentially. Higher compaction water content leads to faster crack development, while higher dry density results in slower crack development. The evolution of desiccation cracks can be divided into stages of crack length extension and crack width widening.

Weather-driven deterioration processes affecting the performance of embankment slopes

Ross A. Stirling et al.

Summary: The deterioration of earthworks in transportation networks has significant negative impacts, including cracking, loss of suction, and gradual loss of mechanical performance. A new mechanism of soil deterioration driven by cyclic wetting and drying leads to micro-structural changes in the soil and changes in water movement, affecting slope stability assessments and requiring changes in soil parameters and ground models.

Water infiltration in a cracked soil considering effect of drying-wetting cycles

Qing Cheng et al.

Summary: Infiltration behavior in cracked soil was investigated in this study, revealing the distinct stages and critical values associated with surface crack ratio. The healing time of cracks and the influence of surface crack ratio on infiltration capacity were found to be significant factors. Additionally, the study showed that infiltration capacity increases dramatically with increasing surface crack ratio, and also with decreasing initial water content and increasing number of drying-wetting cycles.
