Using Local Infrasound to Estimate Seismic Velocity and Earthquake Magnitudes

Kenneth A. Macpherson et al.

Summary: Earthquake ground motions generate pressure perturbations detectable by infrasound sensors. This study uses infrasound sensors in Alaska to examine local infrasound from several earthquakes and estimate seismic velocity time series and earthquake magnitudes. Infrasound sensors can be used as proxy seismometers, providing a new data set for seismic techniques.

Characterizing Infrasound Station Frequency Response Using Large Earthquakes and Colocated Seismometers

David Fee et al.

Summary: Earthquakes generate infrasound in multiple ways. Over 140 infrasound stations have recently been deployed in Alaska, most of which have single sensors. This study examines the data from colocated seismic and infrasound stations in Alaska and finds that a single seismometer may be sufficient for characterizing the response of an entire nearby infrasound array. This method provides a robust way to remotely examine infrasound station frequency response and examine seismoacoustic coupling.

Seismoacoustic Coupled Signals from the 11 July 2020 Ms 5.1 Tangshan, China, Earthquake

Xinghao Yang et al.

Summary: The Ms 5.1 Tangshan earthquake on July 11, 2020 was detected by the infrasound array DQS at a distance of 196 km and an azimuth of 278°. The propagation modeling and backprojection of the infrasound detection confirmed a stratospheric arrival and determined the extended radiation region around the epicenter. The study highlights the ability of infrasound arrays to detect and locate moderate earthquakes, and provides insights into the seismoacoustic coupling mechanism. Rating: 8/10

Topographically Scattered Infrasound Waves Obeserved on Microbarometer Arrays in the Lower Stratosphere

E. J. Bird et al.

Summary: When an acoustic wave encounters a topographic feature, it scatters and loses some of its energy. In this study, we observed the scattered acoustic waves that travel upward before refracting back to the ground. These waves were intercepted by balloon-borne infrasound microbarometers in the lower stratosphere over northern Sweden. The presence of the scattered waves generated a coda, which can be linked to the topography beneath the balloons and low-altitude acoustic ducts. The inclination of the coda signals changed over time, indicating waves arriving from scatterers closer to the receivers. These observations provide insights into the mechanism of amplitude loss due to scattering, which was previously difficult to measure. They contribute to a better understanding of the interaction between atmospheric infrasound propagation and the solid earth.

Infrasound From Large Earthquakes Recorded on a Network of Balloons in the Stratosphere

Raphael F. Garcia et al.

Summary: This study presents the first detection of seismic infrasound from a large magnitude quake on a balloon network, demonstrating the ability to probe quake properties and planet's internal structure from balloon-borne pressure records. The study also observes the mechanical resonances of the balloon system. This research highlights the interest of planetary geophysical missions based on seismic remote sensing with balloon platforms and their potential to complement terrestrial seismic networks.

Infrasound From a Buried Chemical Explosion Recorded on a Balloon in the Lower Stratosphere

Daniel C. Bowman et al.

Summary: Infrasound waveforms generated by natural and anthropogenic phenomena contain important clues about the size and nature of the event. Balloon-borne sensors can record faithful representations of the near-source acoustic wave field at unprecedented range, demonstrating implications for monitoring remote regions of the earth for explosions and volcanic eruptions. Balloon-based infrasound seismology also shows promise for Venus.

Summary: The study focuses on the possibilities for infrasound detection generated from earthquakes using the KUT sensor network and International Monitoring system stations for earthquakes in southern Japan in 2019. The strike-slip mechanisms in earthquakes prevent the detection of P-waves by the sensors, while oceanic earthquakes can convert seismic waves into acoustic waves through the generation of T-phases.

1001 Rocket Launches for Space Missions and Their Infrasonic Signature

Christoph Pilger et al.

Summary: Infrasound array processing is used to monitor atmospheric explosions for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. Rocket launches, as well-defined ground-truth events, have increased globally in the past decade, providing strong infrasonic signatures. Analysis of 1001 rocket launches between 2009 and mid-2020 has allowed for estimation of global detectability of such events and derivation of an amplitude-energy relation.

Summary: By detecting an earthquake for the first time from a balloon-borne microbarometer, this study demonstrates that seismic activity can be detected from a high-altitude platform on Earth. It also shows that Rayleigh wave-induced infrasound can be used to constrain subsurface velocities, laying the groundwork for the detection and characterization of such signals on Venus.
