Hydroxamic acid pre-adsorption raises the efficiency of cosensitized solar cells

Yameng Ren et al.

Summary: We report a method of pre-adsorbing a monolayer of a hydroxamic acid derivative on the surface of titanium dioxide to improve the dye molecular packing and photovoltaic performance of two newly designed co-adsorbed sensitizers. The best performing cosensitized solar cells exhibited a power conversion efficiency of 15.2% under a standard air mass of 1.5 global simulated sunlight and showed long-term operational stability of 500 hours.

Molecular designs, synthetic strategies, and properties for porphyrins as sensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells

Yuzhe Zhang et al.

Summary: In recent decades, significant efforts have been devoted to developing porphyrin sensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) due to their advantages of easy fabrication, low-cost production, and relatively high power conversion efficiency (PCE). Certain molecular design principles and synthetic strategies have been proven effective in constructing high-performance porphyrin-based DSSCs. This review emphasizes the promising and effective synthetic strategies for rational design of porphyrins as sensitizers and highlights the key factors that greatly influence the photovoltaic performance, providing insightful perspectives on the correlation between molecular structure and photovoltaic performance.

Photon- and Charge-Management in Advanced Energy Materials: Combining 0D, 1D, and 2D Nanocarbons as well as Bulk Semiconductors with Organic Chromophores

Alejandro Cadranel et al.

Summary: This contribution highlights seminal works in photon- and charge-management, focusing on electron donor-acceptor conjugates based on porphyrins and nanocarbons. By managing photons through porphyrins and charges through nanocarbons, these conjugates play a crucial role in energy conversion and storage in photovoltaics and photocatalysis. Recent progress in designing multidimensional nanocarbons with unique charge-management features is also emphasized.

Photodynamic and Photoelectrochemical Properties of Few-Layered Bismuthene Film on SnO2 Electrode and Its Hybridization with C60

Tomokazu Umeyama et al.

Summary: Bismuthene, a two-dimensional material obtained from bulk bismuth, was successfully prepared and applied onto a semiconducting SnO2 electrode, demonstrating an increase in conductivity upon photoexcitation. Furthermore, the hybrid composite of FLBi and C-60 showed photoinduced energy transfer without producing the charge-separated state, showing potential for constructing optoelectronic devices.

β-Functionalized push-pull opp-dibenzoporphyrins as sensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cells: the push group effect

Yi Hu et al.

Summary: In this study, beta-functionalized push-pull zinc opp-dibenzoporphyrins were designed and synthesized as sensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cells. The utilization of arylamine as the donor group effectively solved the solar cell instability. Different arylamine donor groups showed varying electronic effects, with diphenylamine and phenothiazine exhibiting strong push-pull characteristics while carbazole canceled out this effect. Solar cells using YH9 and YH10 achieved high power conversion efficiencies, comparable to that of the best ruthenium dye N719. The potential of pi-extended porphyrins as sensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cells was demonstrated in this work.

Manipulation of Charge-Transfer States by Molecular Design: Perspective from Dynamic Exciton

Hiroshi Imahori et al.

Summary: Dynamic exciton, as an important concept in photochemistry, covers various aspects in nature, science, and technology, especially in photoinduced and electrically induced electron transfer. It includes locally excited, charge-transfer, and charge-separated states, with key factors such as CT degree, spin multiplicity, and D-A interaction. The concept of dynamic exciton provides a new approach for innovative designs of energy conversion materials and assemblies, emphasizing the cooperation between nuclear motions and electron-phonon coupling.
