Centrifugal model test on a riverine landslide in the Three Gorges Reservoir induced by rainfall and water level fluctuation

Fasheng Miao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the failure mode of riverside landslides in the Three Gorges Reservoir area in China through a centrifugal model experiment. The experiment reveals the stages of failure and the deformation mechanism under the coupling actions of water level fluctuation and rainfall. The results provide guidance for the analysis and evaluation of riverside landslides.

A novel seepage device and ring-shear test on slip zone soils of landslide in the Three Gorges Reservoir area

Fasheng Miao et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the strength characteristics of slip zone soils under rainfall and reservoir operation for the deformation and evaluation of reservoir accumulative landslides. The slip zone soils from Tongjiaping landslide in the Three Gorges Reservoir area are studied using a self-developed seepage device and ring-shear test. The research reveals that the seepage cycles, seepage pressure, and initial and constant seepage pressure have a weakening effect on the slip zone soils, decreasing their residual strength. When the seepage cycles reach 20, the residual strength of the soil samples decreases rapidly. The Burger model, which combines the Maxwell model and Kelvin model in series, can appropriately describe the creep characteristics of slip zone soils. These findings provide a basis for understanding the mechanism of accumulative landslides under reservoir level fluctuations.

Effect of unloading in two directions on the formation of a deep-seated flexural toppling failure

Guoxiang Tu et al.

Summary: Research indicates that there is a deep-seated flexural toppling failure on the right bank upstream of the Lancang River, leading to the formation of a large volume of rock mass collapses. The intense unloading of rock masses during the rapid downcutting process of rivers is identified as one of the main factors inducing this failure.
