Strength and post-freeze-thaw behavior of a marl soil modified by lignosulfonate and polypropylene fiber: An environmentally friendly approach

Amir Hossein Vakili et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of lignosulfonate and polypropylene fiber as stabilizing and reinforcing agents for marl soil in order to mitigate the detrimental effects of freeze-thaw cycles. The results showed that the addition of 1.5% lignosulfonate and 0.6% PP fibers led to the least reduction in MR during freeze-thaw cycles. The simultaneous application of lignosulfonate and PP fibers improved particle bonding and increased the ductility of the samples.

Summary: This paper aims to predict the factor of safety of natural residual soil slope and man-made overburden mine dump slope using various machine learning techniques. The results indicate that tree-based algorithms have better prediction performance and interpretability compared to linear models. Additionally, machine learning models show higher efficiency in predicting the factor of safety for man-made dump slopes than natural residual soil slopes.

Investigation of the mechanical behavior and continuum damage model of sandstone after freezing-thawing cycle action under different immersion conditions

Yu Zhao et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the influence of freezing-thawing (F-T) cycles on the physical and mechanical properties of sandstone samples under different immersion conditions. The results showed that F-T cycles led to the creation of new cracks and increased porosity. The peak strength and elastic modulus gradually decreased with increasing F-T cycles, while the peak strain showed an ascending trend. The distribution of distinct acoustic emission (AE) counts varied with the F-T cycles and immersion conditions. Samples with fewer F-T cycles suddenly lost their bearing capacity and exhibited shear slipping failure, while samples with more F-T cycles showed decreased brittleness and increased ductility. A continuum damage model was proposed to analyze and describe the damage evolution during uniaxial compression.

Summary: The technique of carbonated stabilization is an innovative method to improve the engineering performance of soft soils. However, the influence of clay minerals on carbonation parameters and D-W cycle performance is not well understood. The results of this study showed that the presence of clay minerals in stabilized soils affected the optimum moisture content for carbonation and the D-W cycle performance differently, highlighting the importance of considering clay minerals in the engineering characteristics of soil.

Predicting the mechanical behaviour of a sandy clay stabilised with an alkali-activated binder

Manuela Correa-Silva et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the geomechanical behavior of low performing soils strengthened with alkali-activated materials, specifically NaOH-activated blast furnace slag, after short and long curing periods. Triaxial compression experiments were conducted to investigate the behavior of the stabilized soil, and a kinematic hardening constitutive model was calibrated and successfully captured the behavior of artificially stabilized sandy clay. The results showed similarities to cement-mixed clays and the model accurately predicted the elastoplastic transition, peak/residual shear strains, and strain-softening behavior after peak strengths in the soil specimens.
