Marc Beaussier et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the risk of contamination through aerosol in hospital settings during the Covid-19 pandemic, finding that airborne spread was limited to rooms during winter conditions but increased in neighboring rooms and public spaces during summer conditions due to sun radiation. The findings have implications for locating infected patients inside buildings and designing future healthcare structures.

Probable cross-corridor transmission of SARS-CoV-2 due to cross airflows and its control

Pan Cheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated a COVID-19 outbreak in a public housing building in Hong Kong using computational fluid dynamics simulations and a multi-zone airflow model. The study found that on the eighth floor of the building, the virus-laden aerosol concentrations were highest in flats 811, 813, 815, 817, and 819, which were opposite flat 812 across the corridor. Opening the doors of flats 813 and 817 increased the aerosol concentrations at least four times compared to other flats. The findings provide a probable explanation for COVID-19 outbreaks in quarantine hotels.

Role of pathogen-laden expiratory droplet dispersion and natural ventilation explaining a COVID-19 outbreak in a coach bus

Qiqi Luo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influencing mechanism of crowded and poorly ventilated buses on infection risks of respiratory diseases. Experimental and CFD simulation results show that the initial droplet diameters, air change rates, and relative humidity have integrated effects on pathogen-laden droplet dispersion and infection risks. Large droplets are mainly affected by gravity, while the dispersion of 5 μm droplets is influenced by ventilation.

Experimental study of urban microclimate on scaled street canyons with various aspect ratios

Jian Hang et al.

Summary: Urban geometry plays a crucial role in shaping urban microclimate through its impact on radiation and ventilation processes. This study conducted scaled outdoor measurements to investigate the surface temperatures, wind velocities, and radiative fluxes in street canyons with different aspect ratios. The findings showed that an increase in aspect ratio leads to reduced convective ventilation and increased trapping radiation, highlighting the importance of urban geometry in influencing microclimate conditions.

Indoor Particle's Pollution in Bucharest, Romania

Lelia Letitia Popescu et al.

Summary: Air pollution ranks fourth in terms of risks to human health, following high blood pressure, tobacco use, and poor diet. It is estimated that air pollution caused 6.67 million deaths worldwide in 2019. In the European Union, 97% of the urban population is exposed to levels of fine particulate matter that exceed the World Health Organization's latest guideline levels. Air pollution accounts for 20% of newborn deaths globally, mostly due to complications from low birth weight and preterm birth.

Investigation of O3-NOx-VOCs chemistry and pollutant dispersion in street canyons with various aspect ratios by CFD simulations

Jian Hang et al.

Summary: A new CFD code named APFoam has been developed based on the OpenFOAM environment, which couples turbulence with the complex photochemical mechanism of NOx-O3-VOCs reactions. Two-dimensional full-scale street canyons with two aspect ratios were studied to investigate the influences of three key factors on photochemical pollutant dispersion and human health risk analysis. Effective measures to control O3 concentration were also discussed.

Revisiting physical distancing threshold in indoor environment using infection-risk-based modeling

Fan Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that the universal 2-meter physical distancing rule based on droplet physics is not always applicable in realistic indoor settings and could potentially increase disease transmission risks. In thermally stratified environments, the infection risk may exhibit multiple peaks beyond 2 meters. Therefore, it is suggested to combine various strategies such as wearing masks, reducing exposure time, and controlling indoor thermal stratification in disease prevention.

Airborne transmission of pathogen-laden expiratory droplets in open outdoor space

Xia Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the evaporation and transport of virus-laden droplets in an open outdoor environment through CFD simulations. Results show that background wind speed and social distance play important roles in droplet dispersion and exposure. A high outdoor wind speed does not necessarily lead to a smaller exposure risk, and proper distancing and positioning are suggested for people outdoors.
