Clinical significance of micronutrient supplements in patients with coronavirus disease 2019: A comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis

Azizullah Beran et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis to assess the clinical significance of individual micronutrients, including vitamin C, vitamin D, and zinc, in COVID-19 patients. The results showed that these individual micronutrient supplements were not associated with a mortality benefit, but vitamin D may be related to a lower intubation rate and shorter length of hospital stay.

Summary: Iodine deficiency has multiple adverse effects on growth and development, but 88% of the global population uses iodized salt. While the number of countries with adequate iodine intake has nearly doubled in the past 15 years, 21 countries still remain deficient. Nutrition and immunity: lessons for COVID-19

Philip C. Calder

Summary: The immune system protects individuals from pathogenic organisms, with good nutrition supporting immune response. Older people, individuals living with obesity, and those who are malnourished are at higher risk of impaired immunity, especially after infection with SARS-CoV-2. Studies suggest that individual micronutrients like vitamin D and zinc may play a role in reducing the severity of infection with SARS-CoV-2.
