Local and distant cortical responses to single pulse intracranial stimulation in the human brain are differentially modulated by specific stimulation parameters

Angelique C. Paulk et al.

Summary: This study systematically examined the effects of different parameters (stimulation amplitude, duration, brain region, and whether grey or white matter was stimulated) on neural responses using single pulse-induced cortico-cortico evoked potentials (CCEP). The results showed that increasing stimulation pulse width and amplitude led to increased responses near the stimulation site, and stimulation at the grey-white matter boundary induced larger responses locally while white matter stimulation produced larger responses at distant sites.

Effects of stimulation intensity on intracranial cortico-cortical evoked potentials: A titration study

A. Mark Hays et al.

Summary: This study investigated optimal stimulation parameters for elicit-ing cortico-cortical evoked potentials (CCEPs) to map functional and epileptogenic networks by studying 13 patients with refractory epilepsy. It was found that at least 2-4 mA is needed to differentiate between non-responsive and responsive sites, while 6-7 mA of stimulation current is needed to maximize amplitude and spatial distribution of N1 responses and stabilize waveform morphology.

Local and distant responses to single pulse electrical stimulation reflect different forms of connectivity

Britni Crocker et al.

Summary: Measuring connectivity in the human brain involves various approaches using both noninvasive and invasive recording modalities, including external probing stimuli. This study found that different connectivity measures, including those derived from active stimulation-based probing, measure different, complementary aspects of regional interrelationships in the brain.
