Dose-response of intermittent theta burst stimulation of the prefrontal cortex: A TMS-EEG study

Manon Desforges et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of three doses of intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) on cortical activity in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex using concurrent transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and electroencephalography (EEG). The results show that doubling or tripling the number of iTBS pulses does not result in stronger potentiation of prefrontal activity.

Designing and comparing cleaning pipelines for TMS-EEG data: A theoretical overview and practical example

Nigel C. Rogasch et al.

Summary: Combining transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) with electroencephalography (EEG) is a popular method for studying neural circuits. However, measuring neural responses to TMS using EEG is challenging due to unique artifacts. This paper reviews these artifacts and offline cleaning methods. Open science practices and open-source toolboxes have improved the availability and reproducibility of cleaning methods. The choice of cleaning pipeline affects TMS-evoked potentials (TEPs), highlighting the need for validation and comparison of cleaning methods.

Removing artifacts from TMS-evoked EEG: A methods review and a unifying theoretical framework

Julio C. Hernandez-Pavon et al.

Summary: This article introduces the technique of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) combined with electroencephalography (EEG) for studying cortical excitability and connectivity. It discusses the issue of EEG signal contamination by artifacts and presents various methods for artifact removal. The article focuses on spatial filter methods, particularly beamforming, as the most widely used approach. The differences in assumptions, challenges, and applicability of these methods are discussed using simulated and recorded data.

Disentangling EEG responses to TMS due to cortical and peripheral activations

Lorenzo Rocchi et al.

Summary: The study aims to measure the separate contributions of auditory and somatosensory stimulation caused by TMS, and assess their impact on the TEP waveform during motor cortex stimulation. Auditory stimulation induces known responses in electrodes around the vertex, which can be suppressed by appropriate noise masking. Stimulation of the scalp alone generates nonspecific responses in central electrodes.

The impact of individual electrical fields and anatomical factors on the neurophysiological outcomes of tDCS: A TMS-MEP and MRI study

Mohsen Mosayebi-Samani et al.

Summary: Individual anatomical factors, such as regional electrode-to-cortex distance and cerebral spinal fluid thickness, were found to significantly impact the effects of tDCS. While these factors negatively correlated with tDCS-induced physiological changes, the electrical fields positively correlated with the effects. These results provide valuable insights into the variability of neuromodulatory effects of tDCS.

Pinging the brain with transcranial magnetic stimulation reveals cortical reactivity in time and space

Sangtae Ahn et al.

Summary: This study provides causal evidence that the early TEP components reflect cortical reactivity to TMS, with the earliest component localized to the left M1, the following components mainly localized to the primary somatosensory cortex, and the later components largely localized to the auditory cortex. Transcranial direct current stimulation selectively modulated cortical and corticospinal excitability by modulating the pre-stimulus mu-rhythm oscillatory power.

The correspondence between EMG and EEG measures of changes in cortical excitability following transcranial magnetic stimulation

Mana Biabani et al.

Summary: TMS measures of motor cortex excitability using EMG and EEG are affected differently by sensory confounds over time points. In the frequency domain, local high-frequency oscillations in EEG recordings show strong correlations with EMG measures of cortical excitability. Despite sensory artefacts, both measures share a response component, suggesting they index a similar cortical activity.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in the management of epilepsy: A systematic review

Pedro Sudbrack-Oliveira et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review on the application of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in patients with epilepsy, and the results indicate that cathodal tDCS may be a safe and effective technique for seizure control in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. However, more and larger sham-controlled randomized trials are needed to further advance this treatment method.

Targeting repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in depression: do we really know what we are stimulating and how best to do it?

Paul B. Fitzgerald

Summary: This paper reviews literature on rTMS targeting methods for major depressive disorder (MDD) treatment, with some evidence suggesting optimal outcomes are achieved with stimulation at a relatively anterior site in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). However, some research indicates the possibility of two effective stimulation sites: one posterior and one anterior in the DLPFC. Neuro-navigational methods are likely to consistently ensure proper placement of the TMS coil for targeted stimulation.

Reproducibility of cortical response modulation induced by intermittent and continuous theta-burst stimulation of the human motor cortex

Recep A. Ozdemir et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown significant variability in responses to TBS protocols, challenging the assumed reliability and lasting effects on cortical excitability. While TMS combined with EEG revealed stable responses to single pulse TMS across visits, the modulatory effects of TBS varied substantially both between and within individuals. The generally accepted mechanisms of TBS-induced neuromodulation through cortical excitability changes may not be accurate, highlighting the need for further research to understand the therapeutic effects of TBS in neuropsychiatry and examine the reproducibility of TBS-induced neuromodulation.
