Stoney vs. Histed: Quantifying the spatial effects of intracortical microstimulation

Karthik Kumaravelu et al.

Summary: This study used computational modeling to investigate the spatial effects of ICMS intensity and resolved the apparent paradox between the findings of Histed and Stoney. The results show that the range over which action potentials are initiated increases with ICMS amplitude, consistent with Stoney, while the volume occupied by activated somata remains constant and the density of activated neurons within that volume increases, consistent with Histed.

Contribution of Interneuron Subtype-Specific GABAergic Signaling to Emergent Sensory Processing in Mouse Somatosensory Whisker Barrel Cortex

Liad J. Baruchin et al.

Summary: The mammalian neocortex plays a crucial role in consciously processing sensory information, with balanced glutamatergic and GABAergic signaling being essential for this function. However, little is known about the interaction between these two signaling pathways. In this study, the authors investigated the contribution of specific GABAergic interneurons (INs) to the development of sensory processing in the mouse whisker barrel cortex. They found that these IN subtypes play a role in early sensory processing over the first few postnatal weeks.

Summary: This study demonstrates the possibility of restoring fingertip sensations through intracortical microstimulation, which could be used to control neuroprostheses for object manipulation. The participant was able to reliably identify stimulation sites and perceive the intensity of the stimulation based on the stimulation amplitude.

Perceived timing of cutaneous vibration and intracortical microstimulation of human somatosensory cortex

Breanne Christie et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the relative latency of intensity-matched vibration and ICMS perception. The results showed that the perception of ICMS lagged behind mechanical stimulation, but the latency differences were small, especially when the stimulus intensities were matched. This suggests that ICMS-based somatosensory feedback is rapid enough to be effective in neuroprosthetic applications.

Characterizing the short-latency evoked response to intracortical microstimulation across a multi-electrode array

Joseph T. Sombeck et al.

Summary: This study investigates the responses of neurons to intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) and demonstrates that single pulses of stimulation can induce trans-synaptically evoked activity followed by neural activity suppression. Trains of ICMS result in increased firing rates. These findings provide important insights into the understanding of circuit connectivity and cortical function, and can inform the design of stimulation patterns for improving afferent interfaces for artificial sensory feedback.

Therapeutic deep brain stimulation disrupts movement-related subthalamic nucleus activity in parkinsonian mice

Jonathan S. Schor et al.

Summary: This study investigated the therapeutic effects and underlying mechanisms of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN DBS) in Parkinson's disease mice. The results suggest that STN DBS exerts its therapeutic effects through disrupting movement-related activity in the subthalamic nucleus. These findings provide new insights for optimizing Parkinson's disease treatments and offer an approach for studying deep brain stimulation in other neuropsychiatric conditions.

The temporal pattern of intracortical microstimulation pulses elicits distinct temporal and spatial recruitment of cortical neuropil and neurons

James R. Eles et al.

Summary: This study investigates the neural response to different Temporal Patterns (TP) of intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) at a network level in mice through in vivo two-photon imaging. It was found that stimulation with the same average frequency and total charge injection but distinct TP recruits different sets of neurons, while neuronal calcium and glutamate response entrain to the bursting TP pattern, showing a potential link between TP and inhibitory-excitatory tone. This suggests that TP could be a valuable parameter to modulate network activity in ICMS therapies beyond just rate coding.
