Efficacy and safety of three new oral antiviral treatment (molnupiravir, fluvoxamine and Paxlovid) for COVID-19: a meta-analysis

Wen Wen et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis on three new oral antivirals (molnupiravir, fluvoxamine, and Paxlovid) and their effects on mortality and hospitalization rates among COVID-19 patients. The results showed that these drugs were effective in reducing mortality and hospitalization rates by approximately 67%. Furthermore, the drugs did not increase adverse events, indicating good overall safety.

Blood-Brain Barrier Dysfunction in the Pathogenesis of Major Depressive Disorder

Shusheng Wu et al.

Summary: Major depression is a complex psychological disease characterized by persistent depressed mood and cognitive impairment. Recent research has identified BBB disruption as a critical factor in the development of depression, contributing to neurological complications. Mechanisms and therapeutic targets for depression-related BBB dysfunction are still largely unknown.

Sex-Related Differences in Long-COVID-19 Syndrome

Giovanna Pela et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that there are sex differences in COVID-19, with women being less prone to severe disease. However, few studies have examined sex differences in Long-COVID-19 syndrome. This study found that women had more symptoms both in the acute phase and during follow-up. Sex was found to be an important determinant of Long-COVID-19 syndrome, with women more likely to experience persistent symptoms. These findings highlight the need for long-term follow-up and personalized treatment strategies from a sex perspective.

Cytotoxic CD8+T cells in cancer and cancer immunotherapy

Hans Raskov et al.

Summary: The functions and interactions between the innate and adaptive immune systems play a crucial role in anticancer immunity. Cytotoxic T cells with CD8 as the most effective effectors in the anticancer immune response form the basis of successful cancer immunotherapies. Advancements in genetically modified or synthetic receptors on cytotoxic T cells are being developed for future cancer treatment. Combinatory regimens may optimize treatment effects and reduce adverse events in cancer therapy.

Sex-dependent role of microglia in disulfide high mobility group box 1 protein-mediated mechanical hypersensitivity

Nilesh M. Agalave et al.

Summary: The study explored the differential effects of TLR4-activating HMGB1 on microglia in male and female mice, finding higher cytokine and chemokine expression in males. Only male mice were protected from HMGB1-induced mechanical hypersensitivity with TLR4 ablation in myeloid-derived cells and minocycline treatment. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed upregulation of antinociceptive proteins in male mice after minocycline administration, with alpha-1-antitrypsin offering partial protection against HMGB1-induced pain specifically in males.

Interleukin-17 induced by cumulative mild stress promoted depression-like behaviors in young adult mice

Jinho Kim et al.

Summary: The study revealed that CPMS mice exposed to cumulative mild stress during early life exhibited more long-lasting anxiety and depression-like behaviors in young adulthood, with IL-17 upregulation contributing to the development of depressive symptoms. By mimicking early life adversities, this research provides an experimental model for young adult depression and suggests IL-17 as a crucial therapeutic target for depression in young adults.

Role of citicoline and choline in the treatment of post-stroke depression: an exploratory study

Francesca Antonia Arcadi et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of SSRIs and nootropic drugs in treating depression and anxiety symptoms in post-stroke patients. Results showed that the SSRI group had better outcomes in reducing depression and anxiety compared to the nootropic group. Nootropic drugs may be a valid therapeutic strategy for managing mild-moderate anxiety or anxious-depressive syndrome in post-stroke patients, but further research is needed.

Sex differences in M2 polarization, chemokine and IL-4 receptors in monocytes and macrophages from asthmatics

Mireya Becerra-Diaz et al.

Summary: The study revealed that female monocytes and macrophages from allergic asthmatic patients expressed M2 genes more robustly following IL-4 stimulation, potentially due to differences in expression of IL-4 receptor and IL-4 signaling negative regulator. Additionally, monocytes from asthmatic women expressed more CX3CR1, which enhances macrophage survival.

Brain inflammation triggers macrophage invasion across the blood-brain barrier in Drosophila during pupal stages

Bente Winkler et al.

Summary: The study reveals that macrophages can enter the brain during infections and autoimmune diseases, participating in pathogen elimination but also potentially causing tissue damage. Through a Drosophila model, it was found that the immune deficiency pathway plays a role in attracting and invading macrophages into the brain.

Temporal Contribution of Myeloid-Lineage TLR4 to the Transition to Chronic Pain: A Focus on Sex Differences

Nolan A. Huck et al.

Summary: The expression of TLR4 in myeloid-lineage cells, astrocytes, and neurons plays a role in the transition from acute to chronic pain, with systemic TLR4 antagonism showing improvement in chronic CRPS when administered early. Additionally, the contribution of TLR4 to chronic pain is time- and microglia-dependent in both sexes, with females also relying on peripheral myeloid-lineage cells for triggering chronic pain.
