Mitochondrial Quality Control in Cardiac-Conditioning Strategies against Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury

Wylly Ramses Garcia-Nino et al.

Summary: Ischemic preconditioning and postconditioning cardioprotective strategies target mitochondria to reduce I/R injury by activating protective signaling pathways and MQC processes, maintaining normal mitochondrial function and ensuring cardiomyocyte survival. MQC includes mitochondrial biogenesis, fission, fusion, mitophagy, and mitochondrial-controlled cell death. Modulation of MQC mechanisms and recognition of mitochondrial targets could offer a potential therapeutic approach for I/R-induced mitochondrial dysfunction.

Ubiquitination and receptor-mediated mitophagy converge to eliminate oxidation-damaged mitochondria during hypoxia

Prasad Sulkshane et al.

Summary: The study reveals that damaged mitochondria can be cleared via Parkin-independent mitophagy under oxidative stress conditions induced by hypoxia or CoCl2. The process involves extensive ubiquitination and degradation of key mitochondrial proteins, independent of the five ubiquitin-binding autophagy receptors. Additionally, the clearance of oxidation-damaged mitochondria relies on DRP1-mediated mitochondrial fragmentation and BNIP3/NIX-mediated mitophagy.
