Comparative Transcriptome Analysis Reveals the Molecular Mechanisms Underlying Male Sterility in Autotetraploid Watermelon

Licong Yi et al.

Summary: Plant male sterility, especially in artificially created autotetraploid watermelon, is still not fully understood. In this study, comparative transcriptome analysis was performed to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to male sterility in autotetraploid watermelon. The DEGs were enriched in lipid metabolism and flavonoid biosynthesis pathways. Additionally, genes involved in anther cuticle development and pollen wall development, as well as differentially expressed transcription factors, were identified. This research provides insights into the molecular mechanism of male sterility in watermelon and related cucurbit plants.

Transcriptome Profiling Reveals Molecular Changes during Flower Development between Male Sterile and Fertile Chinese Cabbage (Brassica rapa ssp. pekinensis) Lines

Jingfeng Hu et al.

Summary: This study used stamen samples from male sterile and male fertile Chinese cabbage lines to investigate molecular changes during flower development, identifying weak transcriptional activity in the sterile line which may lead to abnormal stamen development. Differentially expressed genes were involved in plant hormone, carbon metabolism, and amino acid biosynthesis pathways, with key genes associated with male sterility trait. Transcription factors such as AP2, MYB, bHLH, and WRKY were found to regulate structural genes related to pollen fertility. This research provides important genomic information supporting the utilization of male sterility trait in Chinese cabbage breeding programs.

Genome-wide analysis of changes in miRNA and target gene expression reveals key roles in heterosis for Chinese cabbage biomass

Peirong Li et al.

Summary: The study characterized heterosis in Chinese cabbage F-1 hybrid and its parental lines, showing marked heterosis in leaf weight and biomass yield. Analysis of small RNA sequencing revealed differentially expressed microRNAs at different growth stages, with majority of miRNA clusters in F-1 hybrid showing lower expression levels compared to mid-parent values. Furthermore, transcriptome analysis demonstrated differential expression of genes related to photosynthesis and chlorophyll synthesis in the F-1 hybrid, resulting in increased photosynthesis capacity and chlorophyll content. These findings provide new insights into the regulation of target genes and miRNA expression patterns in leaf size and heterosis for biomass of B. rapa.
