Impact of treatment with active vitamin D calcitriol on bone turnover markers in people with type 2 diabetes and stage 3 chronic kidney disease

Dimitra Stathi et al.

Summary: People with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease are prone to bone mineral disorders and increased fracture risk. This study indicates that oral calcitriol can decrease the levels of bone turnover markers, including osteocalcin, C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen, and fibroblast growth factor-23. Further research is needed to assess the clinical significance and long-term impact on bone health of these findings.

Risk of lower respiratory tract infections: a genome-wide association study with Mendelian randomization analysis in three independent European populations

Helene M. Flatby et al.

Summary: Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality globally. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) identified a strong association between the 15q25.1 locus and LRTI susceptibility. Additionally, factors such as smoking, overweight, obesity, and hypertension were found to increase the risk of LRTIs.

Causal relationship between physical activity, leisure sedentary behaviors and COVID-19 risk: a Mendelian randomization study

Xiong Chen et al.

Summary: This study examined the causal relationship between physical activity/leisure sedentary behaviors and susceptibility to COVID-19. The findings indicated that accelerometer-assessed physical activity decreased the risk of COVID-19 hospitalization, while leisure television watching increased the risk of hospitalization and severity.

Association between obesity and risk of fracture, bone mineral density and bone quality in adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Anne-Frederique Turcotte et al.

Summary: The association between obesity and fracture risk may vary depending on skeletal site and sex, with inconsistent results among studies. While several studies have reported higher bone mineral density in patients with obesity, altered bone quality could be a major determinant of bone fragility in this population.
