Two R2R3-MYB genes cooperatively control trichome development and cuticular wax biosynthesis in Prunus persica

Qiurui Yang et al.

Summary: The surface of fruit plays a crucial role in determining its appearance and postharvest shelf-life. In this study, two functionally redundant genes PpMYB25 and PpMYB26 were identified as regulators of fruit skin texture in peach. PpMYB25 can activate the transcription of PpMYB26, and together they regulate trichome development and cuticular wax accumulation, leading to a fuzzy and dull appearance of peach fruits. In contrast, a nonfunctional mutation of PpMYB25 in nectarine results in a smooth and shiny appearance due to the loss of trichome initiation and decreased cuticular wax accumulation. These findings reveal the coordinated regulation of fruit pubescence and cuticular wax accumulation by PpMYB25 and PpMYB26 and provide insights into the origin of nectarine as a subspecies of peach.

Identification of Malus halliana R2R3-MYB gene family under iron deficiency stress and functional characteristics of MhR2R3-MYB4 in Arabidopsis thaliana

Z-X Zhang et al.

Summary: This study identified 29 MhR2R3-MYB transcription factors in response to iron deficiency stress in Malus halliana, with further focus on MhR2R3-MYB4 which showed significant upregulation. Overexpression of MhR2R3-MYB4 enhanced tolerance to iron deficiency in Arabidopsis thaliana and led to multiple biochemical changes, suggesting its potential role in improving iron deficiency tolerance in apple.

Integrated physiological, proteome and gene expression analyses provide new insights into nitrogen remobilization in citrus trees

Huaye Xiong et al.

Summary: In this study, the potential of nitrogen remobilization in citrus was quantified, and the interaction between photosynthesis, nitrogen metabolism, and carbohydrate metabolism with nitrogen remobilization was investigated using physiological, proteomic, and gene expression analyses. Citrus trees exposed to low nitrogen showed higher nitrogen remobilization efficiency compared to those exposed to high nitrogen. These findings have important implications for nitrogen fertilizer management in orchards.

PtaERF194 inhibits plant growth and enhances drought tolerance in poplar

Shengji Wang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that overexpressing PtaERF194 can enhance plant drought tolerance by improving water use efficiency, limiting water loss, and maintaining high water potential. Conversely, RNAi plants showed similar morphology and physiology to the wild type, indicating redundancy of the function of PtaERF194 with other ERF transcription factors.

Global predictions of primary soil salinization under changing climate in the 21st century

Amirhossein Hassani et al.

Summary: Excess salt accumulation in the root zone causes soil salinization, which affects soil health, biodiversity, and food security. The authors used machine learning algorithms to predict global soil salinization under changing climate in the 21st century, identifying hotspots in drylands such as South America, southern and western Australia, Mexico, southwest United States, and South Africa. Conversely, they project a decrease in soil salinity in northwest United States, the Horn of Africa, Eastern Europe, Turkmenistan, and west Kazakhstan in response to climate change.
