A new panenteric capsule endoscopy-based strategy in patients with melena and a negative upper gastrointestinal endoscopy: a prospective feasibility study

Alessandro Mussetto et al.

Summary: In this pilot study, it was found that panenteric capsule endoscopy (PCE) is feasible and safe for patients with melena and negative esophagogastroduodenoscopy, with an 83% diagnostic yield for identifying the bleeding site. PCE led to small bowel therapeutic interventions in 50% of patients, avoiding unnecessary standard colonoscopy. Further large prospective randomized studies investigating this strategy are warranted.

Clinical feasibility of panintestinal (or panenteric) capsule endoscopy: a systematic review

Pablo Cortegoso Valdivia et al.

Summary: Panintestinal capsule endoscopy (PCE) with double-headed capsules has been proven to be a feasible technique for complete exploration of both small bowel and colon in a single sitting. Studies have shown acceptable rates of cleanliness and completeness, but further research is needed to fully explore its potential.

Cristiano Spada et al.

Summary: ESGE/ESGAR strongly recommend computed tomographic colonography (CTC) for diagnosing colorectal neoplasia and suggest CTC or colon capsule endoscopy (CCE) if colonoscopy is incomplete. They provide guidelines on how to choose the appropriate imaging method in different scenarios.
