Degree of arterial stiffness is comparable across inflammatory joint disease entities

F. K. Fohse et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare arterial stiffness in patients with different inflammatory joint diseases and explore its relationship with estimated cardiovascular disease risk. The results showed that arterial stiffness was similar among IJD entities and significantly correlated with the estimated CVD risk.

Biomechanical Properties of Common Carotid Arteries Assessed by Circumferential 2D Strain and β Stiffness Index in Patients With Ankylosing Spondylitis

Helena Forsblad-d'Elia et al.

Summary: The research examined biomechanical properties of the common carotid artery in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), finding that strain and stiffness were associated with factors like age, disease characteristics, and traditional risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Strain showed associations with AS-related factors and age, whereas stiffness was only associated with age, indicating different pathogenic vascular processes.

The Prevalence of Cardiac Diseases in a Contemporary Large Cohort of Dutch Elderly Ankylosing Spondylitis Patients-The CARDAS Study

Milad Baniaamam et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the prevalence of diastolic left ventricular dysfunction and conduction disorders in elderly ankylosing spondylitis patients was similar to controls and not clinically relevant. However, ankylosing spondylitis patients had up to five times increased odds of developing aortic valve regurgitation compared to controls.

Arterial stiffness, the hidden face of cardiovascular risk in autoimmune and chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases

Marie Berger et al.

Summary: Arterial stiffness is increased in chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, with traditional cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension and dyslipidemia accentuating this relationship. Current data are insufficient to determine the significant impact of disease activity on arterial stiffness, but disease duration plays a critical role, while TNF-alpha inhibitors and cardiorespiratory fitness tend to decrease arterial stiffness. Increased arterial stiffness leads to diastolic dysfunction, the main mechanism of heart failure in chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases.

Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease in Rheumatoid Arthritis: Impact of Inflammation and Antirheumatic Treatment

Anne Mirjam Kerola et al.

Summary: Patients with rheumatoid arthritis have a 1.5-fold increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease compared to the general population due to a combination of traditional risk factors and systemic inflammation. Treatment of systemic inflammation with antirheumatic medication, along with managing traditional risk factors, is crucial for reducing cardiovascular disease risk in this high-risk patient group. Various antirheumatic drugs have shown potential in reducing cardiovascular disease risk in observational studies, but more randomized controlled trials with hard endpoints are needed. Anti-inflammatory therapies targeting specific pathways may be potential treatments after a cardiovascular event in patients without rheumatic disease.
