Assessment of Rheological Behaviour of Water-in-Oil Emulsions Mediated by Glycolipid Biosurfactant Produced by Bacillus megaterium SPSW1001

Varsha Singh et al.

Summary: In this study, a screening programme successfully isolated a Bacillus megaterium capable of producing surface active molecules that significantly lower surface tension and interfacial tension. The biosurfactant product was then used to evaluate its effects on rheological characteristics of water-in-oil emulsion. Structural and mass spectral analysis revealed the glycolipid nature of the biosurfactant. The water-in-oil emulsion showed non-Newtonian viscoelastic dilatant flow, fitting appropriately with the Herschel-Bulkley model.

A novel glyceroglycolipid from brown algae Ishige okamurae improve photoaging and counteract inflammation in UVB-induced HaCaT cells

Zhenbang Xiao et al.

Summary: The study found that IGS effectively suppressed the high expressions and secretions of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and photo-inflammation by blocking MAPKs, AP-1, and NF-kappa B pathways, while also increasing antioxidant enzyme expression. These effects might be attributed to its hydrogen supply, hydrophobic capacity, and enhancement of procollagen production through upregulating the TGF-beta/Smad pathways, indicating the potential of IGS in preventing skin photoaging as skincare products or functional foods.

Palm kernel fatty acid distillate as substrate for rhamnolipids production using Pseudomonas sp. LM19

Cui Wen Thio et al.

Summary: Biosurfactants have high surface activity, high biodegradability, and low toxicity, making them useful in various industries. However, their production and cost limit their applications. This study investigated the use of palm kernel fatty acid distillate (PKFAD) as a substrate for biosurfactant production, and found that under optimal conditions, biosurfactant concentration increased 3.2-fold, producing 1.6 g/L of biosurfactant. The produced biosurfactant was glycolipid in nature and had the ability to reduce surface tension. PKFAD shows potential as a substrate for biosurfactant production.

Optimization and characterization of rhamnolipid production by Pseudomonas aeruginosa NY3 using waste frying oil as the sole carbon

Han Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that the concentrations of NaNO3, Na2HPO4, and trace elements were key factors affecting the production yield of rhamnolipids when using waste frying oil as the carbon source. After optimization, the diversity of rhamnolipid congeners increased, with the major constituent shifting from di-rhamnolipids to mono-rhamnolipids. These results suggest that the concentrations of components in the culture medium of Pseudomonas aeruginosa NY3 not only affect the yield of rhamnolipids, but also their congener distribution.
