Performance and metagenomics analysis of anaerobic digestion of food waste with adding biochar supported nano zero-valent iron under mesophilic and thermophilic condition

Xinzi Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of biochar supported nano zero-valent iron (BC-nZVI) on anaerobic digestion performance of food waste (FW). The results showed that BC-nZVI could enhance methane production, reduce lag time, stimulate hydrolysis process, and improve system stability. Metagenomic analysis revealed that BC-nZVI contributed to strengthen methanogenesis through enriching the various predominant methanogenic pathways and activating most enzymes related to methane metabolism.

Genome-centric metagenomics analysis revealed the metabolic function of abundant microbial communities in thermal hydrolysis-assisted thermophilic anaerobic digesters under propionate stress

Liang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study elucidated the ecological roles and interactions of microbial communities in thermophilic THP-AD reactors. It was found that Fir-micutes dominated the enriched microbial community, and methane production was primarily mediated by Methanosarcina and Methanothermobacter. The accumulation of propionate could be attributed to weak propionate-oxidizing activity or its absence.

A multifaceted screening of applied voltages for electro-assisted anaerobic digestion of blackwater: Significance of temperature, hydrolysis/acidogenesis, electrode corrosion, and energy efficiencies

Qi Huang et al.

Summary: A microbial electrolysis cell-assisted anaerobic digester was used to treat vacuum toilet blackwater, and the best performance was achieved at room temperature with an applied voltage of 1.2 V. This condition resulted in increased methane yield, COD removal, hydrolysis and acidogenesis efficiency. The operation at room temperature also led to the enrichment of hydrolytic and syntrophic bacteria and increased abundance of genes encoding complex organic metabolism. Furthermore, the net energy generated at room temperature (R-20) with 1.2 V was 1.16 times higher than that generated at 35 degrees C (R-35) with the optimum voltage for methane yield (0.8 V), suggesting that ambient temperature operation of MEC-AD systems is a more sustainable strategy.
