Identification of partial denitrification granulation enhanced by low C/N ratio in the aspect of metabolomics and quorum sensing

Chenyang Ma et al.

Summary: The study found that different influent COD/N ratios can affect the granulation mechanism, with higher COD/N ratios increasing extracellular polysaccharide secretion, while lower COD/N ratios promoting the enhancement of amino acids biosynthesis pathway. PDGS exhibited stronger AHLs-based QS mechanism during the operational period. The addition of AHLs significantly improved amino acid synthesis.

Effects of various antibiotics on aerobic nitrogen removal and antibiotic degradation performance: Mechanism, degradation pathways, and microbial community evolution

Donghui Liang et al.

Summary: The selective inhibitory effects of various antibiotics on aerobic nitrogen removal were investigated, showing different removal efficiencies and degradation pathways for different antibiotics. High-throughput sequencing revealed that aerobic denitrifying, recalcitrant pollutant degrading, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria dominate during the community evolution process.

Specific Denitrifying and Dissimilatory Nitrate Reduction to Ammonium Bacteria Assisted the Recovery of Anammox Community From Nitrite Inhibition

Xuejiao Qiao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microbial shift and functional interactions of AnAOB, DN, and DNRA bacteria during long-term nitrite inhibition and self-recovery in a laboratory-scale anammox bioreactor. The results showed that DN and DNRA bacteria could stabilize the nitrite concentration and contribute to system recovery under high nitrite conditions. These findings provide potential engineering solutions for maintaining a robust and efficient industrial-scale anammox process.

Physiology of anammox adaptation to low temperatures and promising biomarkers: A review

V. Kouba et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the mechanisms of anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) bacteria adaptation to low temperatures, which include synthesizing molecular chaperones and chemical chaperones, reducing biosynthesis, and preserving energy for core metabolism. The study proposed biomarkers to assess the extent of bacteria adaptation and predict the decomposition of biofilms/granules or slower growth.

Metabonomics reveals an alleviation of fitness cost in resistant E. coli competing against susceptible E. coli at sub-MIC doxycycline

Xin Wen et al.

Summary: Our study found that a low proportion of resistant bacteria coexisted with susceptible bacteria due to fitness costs in the absence of doxycycline. However, the fitness cost for resistant bacteria decreased at 1 mg/L doxycycline and disappeared at 2 mg/L. Metabonomics analysis revealed that bypass carbon metabolism and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites were the primary metabolic pathways enriching various upregulated metabolites in resistant bacteria without doxycycline.

Enhanced nitrogen removal by partial nitrification-anammox process with a novel high-frequency micro-aeration (HFMA) mode: Metabolic interactions among functional bacteria

Yulei Chi et al.

Summary: A novel HFMA mode was proposed to improve the performance of partial nitrification-anammox system. Microbial metabolism changes led to significant increases in nitrite accumulation rate and abundance of anammox bacteria when treating wastewater with a carbon/nitrogen ratio of 3.
