Highly efficient conversion of sunflower stalk-hydrolysate to furfural by sunflower stalk residue-derived carbonaceous solid acid in deep eutectic solvent/organic solvent system

Lei Gong et al.

Summary: In this study, sunflower stalk was used as a raw material and catalyst for furfural production, and efficient conversion of xylose-rich hydrolysate into furfural was achieved using the carbonaceous solid acid catalyst SO42-/SnO2-SSXR in an aqueous deep eutectic solvent/organic solvent medium. The study revealed that under optimal conditions, a furfural yield of 82.6% was obtained, and the catalyst and solvent exhibited good recyclability for furfural production. This research demonstrates the high potential for sustainable application of furfural production.

Dissolution reaction kinetics and mass transfer during aqueous choline chloride pre-treatment of oak wood

Pobitra Halder et al.

Summary: Research on lignocellulosic biomass processing in ionic liquids has shown that oak wood dissolution in aqueous choline chloride occurs in two stages, with diffusion of the ionic liquid being the controlling step in the first stage and surface chemical reaction in the second stage. The diffusion of choline chloride into the oak wood matrix ranged between 2.96E-14 and 2.84E-13 m(2)/s, with activation energies for different stages being approximately 24.2 and 40.3 kJ mol(-1). The proposed mathematical correlation for mass transfer coefficient was well-fitted with experimental values.
