Inoculation of Neurospora sp. for improving ammonia production during thermophilic composting of organic sludge

Mitsuhiko Koyama et al.

Summary: Recent research shows that inoculated Neurospora sp. can enhance organic matter decomposition and improve ammonia conversion in thermophilic composting of organic sludge. Pretreated sludge with Neurospora sp. exhibited significantly higher organic matter decomposition and improved ammonia conversion rate. Enzymes with high activity during pretreatment were identified to be involved in the degradation of hardly degradable fractions.

Improving food waste composting efficiency with mature compost addition

Yumei Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of mature compost addition on food waste composting properties. Results showed that mature compost amendment increased the reduction rate of volatile solids and shortened the composting period. Addition of mature compost enhanced the bacterial abundance related to maturity and promoted the degradation of organic matter by providing an appropriate temperature environment. This study revealed the underlying mechanisms of bacterial community succession with mature compost addition.

Characteristics of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur cycling genes, microbial community metabolism and key influencing factors during composting process supplemented with biochar and biogas residue

Nanyi Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the functional genes and microbial communities involved in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur cycling during composting with biochar and biogas residue amendments. Correlations between microbial community structure, functional genes, and physicochemical properties were analyzed. The findings showed that biogas residue decreased the abundance of denitrification gene nirK, while biochar increased the abundance of Humicola. Temperature, pH, and EC were identified as the main factors affecting the microbial community. The study provides valuable insights into the metabolic characteristics of microbial communities during composting and the application of biochar and biogas residues.

Biochar addition reduces nitrogen loss and accelerates composting process by affecting the core microbial community during distilled grain waste composting

Shi-Peng Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that adding 10% biochar during distilled grain waste composting can reduce nitrogen loss and shorten the process period by approximately 14 days. The addition of biochar accelerates microbial succession, enhances nitrification, and inhibits denitrification, thereby reducing nitrogen loss during composting.

Aeration rate improves the compost quality of food waste and promotes the decomposition of toxic materials in leachate by changing the bacterial community

Yumei Wang et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of aeration rates on maturity, leachate, and bacterial community succession during food waste composting. Results showed that the recommended ventilation rate can improve compost quality and leachate utilization. Additionally, specific bacterial communities shaped by aeration could be manipulated by adjusting NH4+, NO3- contents, and pH in the initial composting stage.

Bacterial community diversity, lignocellulose components, and histological changes in composting using agricultural straws for Agaricus bisporus production

Tingting Song et al.

Summary: The study found that different agricultural straws exhibited variations in degradation under the same compost conditions, with wheat straw, rice straw, and cotton straw inducing significantly higher mushroom yields than other straws. Genera such as Thermobispora, Thermopolyspora, and Vulgatibacter may play important roles in the degradation of different agricultural straws. Adjusting formulations and compost methods based on different agricultural straws could potentially lead to high-yield mushroom production in the future.
