The interaction between temperature and citric acid treatment in the anaerobic fermentation of Chinese cabbage waste

Jiawei Li et al.

Summary: Temperature is an important factor for recycling Chinese cabbage waste. This study evaluated the effects of temperature on the anaerobic fermentation of Chinese cabbage waste treated with citric acid. The results showed that citric acid treatment improved acetic acid concentration, reduced ammonia nitrogen levels, and affected microbial abundance and functional pathways. At 15 and 35 degrees C, citric acid treatment improved aerobic stability and reduced alkaline pollutant generation, while at 25 degrees C, it exacerbated aerobic deterioration.

pH-Responsive Antimicrobial Peptide with Selective Killing Activity for Bacterial Abscess Therapy

Zhihua Wang et al.

Summary: This study synthesized a series of pH-responsive antimicrobial peptides, among which F5 exhibited outstanding pH-responsive activity and low toxicity. It killed bacteria through a membrane-disruptive mechanism at acidic pH values and showed excellent therapeutic ability in a mouse abscess model.

Strategies employed in the design of antimicrobial peptides with enhanced proteolytic stability

Zhenheng Lai et al.

Summary: Due to the fast development of multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens, the development and modification of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are highly active. However, the clinical translation of peptide antibiotics is still inadequate despite considerable efforts. Improving the proteolytic stability of AMPs is crucial and various design strategies have been explored.

Gelatinised and hydrolysed corn starch is a cost-effective carbon source with higher production of L-lactic acid by Bacillus coagulans compared with glucose

Kun Yao et al.

Summary: L-lactic acid is an important organic acid widely used in pharmaceutical, food and textile industries, and Bacillus coagulans BCS13002 can efficiently produce L-lactic acid with GHCS as the carbon source. Key enzymes identified in proteomics analyses contribute to the higher production of L-lactic acid, providing a biological basis for using GHCS as a substitute for glucose.

Clarifying the relationships among bacteria, lipid-related enzymes, main polyunsaturated fatty acids and fat-soluble vitamins in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) silage using various sugar supplementations

J. X. Wu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of different sugars on alfalfa silages, revealing that supplementation of fructose, glucose, and sucrose increased alpha-linolenic acid content, while molasses treatment reduced beta-carotene loss. Next-generation sequencing results showed alterations in bacterial communities. Citrobacter, Pediococcus, and Lactococcus were positively correlated with lipoxygenase, while Lactobacillus was involved in degrading alpha-tocopherol.

Biorefinery of discarded carrot juice to produce carotenoids and fermentation products

Marta Ramos-Andres et al.

Summary: Discarded carrots, a major source of food waste, have high humidity and require specific biorefinery for valorization. Separated into pulp and juice, the juice went through a process of separation and purification to obtain fractions rich in carotenoids and sugars, which were further encapsulated for potential applications in the food and pharmaceutical industry.
