Imidazole Pretreatment of Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunches for Ethanol and Succinic Acid Co-production by Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Pichia stipitis

Luis Alberto Zevallos Torres et al.

Summary: Imidazole pretreatment of oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) effectively reduces biomass recalcitrance and co-produces ethanol and succinic acid. Among two different yeasts, Saccharomyces cerevisiae achieves higher ethanol titer, productivity, and shorter fermentation time compared to Pichia stipitis. In terms of biorefinery, imidazole-pretreated OPEFB can efficiently utilize lignocellulosic biomass and minimize agro-industrial waste.

Citric acid assisted hydrothermal pretreatment for the extraction of pectin and xylooligosaccharides production from cocoa pod husks

Kim Kley Valladares-Diestra et al.

Summary: This study successfully developed a new citric acid assisted hydrothermal pretreatment method for cocoa pod husks, which improves the pectin recovery rate and produces xylooligosaccharides. The results under optimal conditions showed great potential for the application of CPH hydrothermal pretreatment in the production of high value-added biomolecules under the biorefinery concept.

Optimization of alkaline pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis of cocoa pod husk (Theobroma cacao L.) for ethanol production

Alonso G. Hernandez-Mendoza et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the production of bioethanol from cocoa pod husk through optimized alkaline pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis processes. The optimal alkaline pretreatment condition was found to be 5% NaOH for 30 minutes at 120 degrees Celsius, while optimal enzymatic hydrolysis conditions were 10 FPU g(-1) substrate and 10% solid loading.
