Chemotherapy: a double-edged sword in cancer treatment

Nafiseh Behranvand et al.

Summary: Chemotherapy is a well-known and effective treatment for cancers, but its efficiency in eradicating all cancer cells falls short of expectations. Research suggests that alterations in the tumor microenvironment's physiological conditions may contribute to this. Using mild anti-inflammatory drugs during chemotherapy could potentially lead to more successful clinical outcomes.

Protective effect of astragalus membranaceus and its bioactive compounds against the intestinal inflammation in Drosophila

Jianzheng He et al.

Summary: Astragalus membranaceus extract (AME) provides protection against sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-induced colitis in Drosophila flies by suppressing oxidative stress-associated JNK and JAK-STAT signaling pathways, offering a potential natural medicine for intestinal inflammatory disease in humans.

Drosophila as a Model Organism to Study Basic Mechanisms of Longevity

Anna A. Ogienko et al.

Summary: The spatio-temporal regulation of gene expression is crucial for the fate and function of cells and tissues, as well as the development and functioning of complex organisms. Alterations in gene expression can lead to various pathologies and have a significant impact on lifespan. The fruit fly, Drosophila, serves as an ideal model system to study the mechanisms of longevity and aging, due to its cost-effectiveness, ease of handling, and availability of tools for gene expression modulation.

Alpha-lipoic acid ameliorates cytarabine-induced developmental anomalies in rat fetus

Ramanachary Namoju et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the protective effect of ALA against Ara-C induced developmental toxicity in rat fetus. Treatment with Ara-C led to decreased food intake, weight gain, placental weight, and increased oxidative stress in pregnant rats. In-utero exposure to Ara-C resulted in fetal mortality, resorptions, oxidative stress, external morphological anomalies, and limb abnormalities. Co-administration of ALA ameliorated the toxic effects of Ara-C in pregnant rats and fetuses.

Polysaccharides from Premna microphylla turcz ameliorate inflammation via the enhancement of intestinal resistance in host

Guanglei Song et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the significant anti-inflammatory effects of Premna microphylla turcz polysaccharides, including prolonging the lifespan of inflamed flies, restoring intestinal microvilli and nucleus structure, and enhancing expression of immune-related genes. Additionally, the polysaccharides also showed potential in modulating the composition of intestinal microbiota.

Drosophila H2Av negatively regulates the activity of the IMD pathway via facilitating Relish SUMOylation

Ruijuan Tang et al.

Summary: Insects rely on the innate immune response, including antimicrobial peptides produced through Toll and IMD signaling pathways, to defend against pathogens. The histone variant H2Av is found to negatively regulate the IMD pathway by facilitating Relish SUMOylation, preventing spontaneous AMP production. This interaction suggests a new mechanism for immune response regulation in Drosophila.

Gastrodin extends the lifespan and protects against neurodegeneration in the Drosophila PINK1 model of Parkinson's disease

Jianzheng He et al.

Summary: This study found that Gastrodin significantly prolonged the lifespan of flies, enhanced their antioxidant and neuroprotective abilities, and delayed neurodegeneration in a Parkinson's disease model. These results suggest that Gastrodin may be an ideal candidate for anti-aging therapy development.
