Summary: The water extract solution of Huang-Lian-Jie-Du decoction (WEH) attenuated inflammatory responses, rearranged the acute myelopoiesis related transcriptional factor profile, and protected mice from lethal septic shock by blocking multiple signaling pathways. Mixing the nine principal ingredients of WEH reproduced the protective effect, and reducing compounds within a multi-herb water extract to a seven-chemical combination exhibited superior therapeutic efficacy compared with WEH.
