Hydrogen peroxide can be a plausible biomarker in cyanobacterial bloom treatment

Takashi Asaeda et al.

Summary: The effects of combined stresses, photoinhibition, and nutrient depletion on the oxidative stress of cyanobacteria were investigated in laboratory experiments. The results showed that both light intensity and phosphorus concentration influenced the H2O2 concentration protein(-1), which was also correlated with the protein content. Based on the experimental results, an empirical formula for predicting cyanobacterial biomass was developed.

New Xanthene Dyes with NIR-II Emission Beyond 1200 nm for Efficient Tumor Angiography and Photothermal Therapy

Chuangli Zhang et al.

Summary: Fluorescence bioimaging in the second near-infrared window offers improved imaging quality for deep-seated tumor diagnosis. However, integrating fluorescence bioimaging and photothermal therapy in the same molecule is challenging due to the trade-off between photothermal efficiency and fluorescence brightness. This study presents a strategy to balance radiative and nonradiative decay for efficient utilization of both fluorescence and photothermy in the NIR-II window.

A multicolor and ratiometric fluorescent sensing platform for metal ions based on arene-metal-ion contact

Anna Kanegae et al.

Summary: A fluorescent sensing platform based on arene-metal-ion contact was developed for multicolor and ratiometric detection of metal ions across a broad wavelength range. The flexible molecular design allows for the detection of various metal ions with emission red-shifts. X-ray crystallography and theoretical calculations revealed the mechanism behind the emission red-shift induced by the coordinated metal ions. The probes showed promising differential sensing capabilities and applicability for ratiometric imaging of metal ions under live-cell conditions.

Glutathione in Protein Redox Modulation through S-Glutathionylation and S-Nitrosylation

Elena Kalinina et al.

Summary: S-glutathionylation and S-nitrosylation are reversible post-translational modifications on the cysteine thiol groups of proteins, important for regulating protein functional activity and cellular processes. The connection and switch functions between these modifications are performed by GSNO, dependent on factors like GSH content, GSH/GSSG ratio, and cellular redox state. Trx family enzymes play a crucial role in regulating these processes, with their activity determined by cellular redox status and GSH/GSSG ratio.

Subcellular Localizations of Catalase and Exogenously Added Fatty Acid in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

Naohiro Kato et al.

Summary: Fatty acids play a crucial role in biological processes, but their metabolism in microalgae, particularly in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, differs from animals and yeast. Recent studies on C. reinhardtii suggest that lipid turnover is mainly focused on recycling acyl chains within membranes rather than beta-oxidation for energy production. This preference for membrane turnover over beta-oxidation is highlighted through fluorescence microscopy analysis, which also reveals the detoxifying capability of the alga towards hydrogen peroxide produced during beta-oxidation.
