Waste-to-energy conversion technologies in the UK: Processes and barriers - A review

William Foster et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the waste-to-energy sector, emphasizing the processes and feedstock involved, particularly highlighting the potential of anaerobic digestion in reducing pollution from manure and slurry. The significant role of manure in producing biogas for electricity generation is discussed, with the possibility of producing over 1.615 TWh of electricity in the UK if most manure and slurry were processed through biogas harvesting.

Effects of substrate types on the transformation of heavy metal speciation and bioavailability in an anaerobic digestion system

Xiarong Zheng et al.

Summary: Chemical speciation plays a crucial role in determining the potential toxicity and bioavailability of heavy metals. The study revealed that the anaerobic digestion process had a greater impact on the speciation of heavy metals in pig manure and chicken manure, while the effect was less significant in cattle manure and rice straw. The changes in bioavailability followed the order of pig manure > chicken manure > cattle manure > rice straw.

Bioavailability and eco-toxicity of heavy metals in chars produced from municipal sewage sludge decreased during pyrolysis and hydrothermal carbonization

Mozhdeh Alipour et al.

Summary: This study investigated the chemical speciation, bioavailability, and eco-toxicity of heavy metals in biochars and hydrochars produced from municipal sewage sludge through pyrolysis and hydrothermal carbonization. The results indicated that hydrochars had higher enrichment of heavy metals compared to biochars and the bioavailability of heavy metals decreased significantly during the treatment processes.

Country-level assessment of agrifood waste and enabling environment for sustainable utilisation for bioenergy in Nigeria

Oluwasola O. D. Afolabi et al.

Summary: Efforts to address agrifood losses and waste are essential to ensure sustainable supply of nutritional agrifood commodities. This study in Nigeria estimated the amount of agrifood loss and waste generated annually, revealing a significant potential for bioenergy production. However, the lack of specific regulatory frameworks for agrifood waste management poses a challenge to fully utilize this bioenergy potential.
