The Endometrial Microbiome and Its Impact on Human Conception

Bruno Toson et al.

Summary: Changes in the female genital tract microbiome are related to gynecological and obstetrical pathologies, but the influence of endometrial bacterial communities on human reproduction is still debated. Understanding the impact of microbiome on fertility allows personalized treatment and improves clinical outcomes.

Maternal and early life exposures and their potential to influence development of the microbiome

Erin E. Bolte et al.

Summary: In the early 20th century, maternal and child healthcare was mainly provided by family members and untrained birth attendants. Later research linked adverse health outcomes to poverty and poor nutrition. Recent studies have shown the importance of early life exposures in relation to common diseases. The developing brain, immune system, and metabolic physiology are particularly vulnerable to poor nutrition and stressful environments from pregnancy to 3 years of age. Evidence suggests that certain environmental exposures during pregnancy and lactation can modify our microbiome and increase the risk of childhood and adult diseases.

Human microbial dysbiosis as driver of gynecological malignancies

Supratim Mandal et al.

Summary: Gynecological cancers, which have high relapse rate and mortality, are still lacking effective treatment methods. Recent studies have shown that gynecological cancers are closely related to dysbiosis of the microbiome, and specific microbial signatures are significantly associated with different types of gynecological cancers. Dysbiosis of the microbiome also affects immune response and gene expression, further promoting the development of gynecological malignancies. Therefore, in-depth research on microbial dysbiosis and its underlying mechanisms is of great significance for early diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of gynecological cancers.

Vaginal microbiome and cervical cancer

Maria Kyrgiou et al.

Summary: The microbiome in the female reproductive tract plays a crucial role in maintaining health and homeostasis. Imbalances in the genital tract microbiome and specific bacteria and cytokines may contribute to the development of HPV infection and cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia, leading to cervical cancer.

Metagenomic Shotgun Sequencing of Endocervical, Vaginal, and Rectal Samples among Fijian Women with and without Chlamydia trachomatis Reveals Disparate Microbial Populations and Function across Anatomic Sites: a Pilot Study

Sankhya Bommana et al.

Summary: Chlamydia trachomatis is the primary cause of bacterial sexually transmitted infections worldwide. This study investigates the microbial composition and function in the vagina, endocervix, and rectum of Fijian women with and without C. trachomatis infections. The results show unique microbial profiles in C. trachomatis-infected women, with more complex microbial pathways in the endocervix compared to the vagina. In addition, some women showed similarities in microbiome composition across different sites, suggesting potential intragenitorectal transmission. This study highlights the importance of understanding genitorectal microbiomes in promoting C. trachomatis infection and calls for larger prospective studies to better define the microbiomes of Pacific Islanders.

Large Comparative Analyses of Primate Body Site Microbiomes Indicate that the Oral Microbiome Is Unique among All Body Sites and Conserved among Nonhuman Primates

Abigail E. Asangba et al.

Summary: The microbiome plays a crucial role in host health and disease, but there is still much unknown about its diversity and evolution. This study compared microbiome community compositions from different body sites across 17 nonhuman primate species, finding distinct differences in the oral microbiome compared to other body sites. Furthermore, host species differences were found to shape the microbiome within specific body sites.

Female reproductive dysfunctions and the gut microbiota

Sangappa B. Chadchan et al.

Summary: This review provides an updated overview of the relationship between the gut microbiome and female reproductive diseases. Recent studies have revealed associations between altered gut microbial compositions and gynecological pathologies such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, endometriosis, and endometrial cancer. Future research should focus on determining the molecular mechanisms underlying these associations.

Summary: The healthy functioning of the female reproductive tract relies on balanced hormonal regulation during different reproductive stages. The mucosal epithelial lining in various regions of the FRT enables selective transport of gametes and successful transfer of the zygote. Three-dimensional organoid systems from the FRT now offer valuable experimental models for studying normal physiology and disease.
