Selenium Deficiency Promotes Oxidative Stress-Induced Mastitis via Activating the NF-κB and MAPK Pathways in Dairy Cow

Yanhe Zhang et al.

Summary: Selenium deficiency induces oxidative stress, resulting in ROS accumulation and secretion of inflammatory factors to activate the NF-kappa B/MAPK signaling pathway, promoting mastitis occurrence.

The Role and Mechanism of Essential Selenoproteins for Homeostasis

Ruihua Ye et al.

Summary: Selenium is an essential trace element that plays a vital biological role in the body through selenoproteins. Selenoproteins are involved in various biological processes such as oxidative stress regulation, immune response, and antioxidant defense. Both deficiency and excess selenium can cause damage to the body. Selenium intake is mainly through dietary supplements. This paper reviews the synthesis and mechanism of selenoproteins, as well as their role and mechanism in disease regulation, and prospects the future development of selenium-enriched products.

Spirulina platensis aqueous extracts ameliorate colonic mucosal damage and modulate gut microbiota disorder in mice with ulcerative colitis by inhibiting inflammation and oxidative stress

Jian Wang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the modulatory effect of Spirulina platensis aqueous extracts (SP) on microbiota disorders in ulcerative colitis (UC) mice and clarify the underlying mechanisms by which SP alleviates damage to the intestinal mucosal barrier. The results showed that SP could alleviate the severity of colonic mucosal damage in UC mice and improve gut microbiota disorder by increasing antioxidant enzyme activity and expression of tight junction proteins (TJs) in the colon.

Selenium-containing polysaccharide from Spirulina platensis alleviates Cd-induced toxicity in mice by inhibiting liver inflammation mediated by gut microbiota

Ning Zhou et al.

Summary: This study found that selenium-containing polysaccharide from Spirulina platensis (Se-SPP) alleviates cadmium-induced toxicity in mice by targeting liver inflammation and gut microbiota. The beneficial effects were achieved through upregulation of antioxidant enzyme activity, restoration of the intestinal barrier, and modulation of inflammation-related substances in the liver.

Selenium Deficiency-Induced Damage and Altered Expression of Mitochondrial Biogenesis Markers in the Kidneys of Mice

Hehuan Lai et al.

Summary: The study revealed that selenium deficiency induced renal injury in mice, potentially affecting renal function by increasing oxidative stress and causing mitochondrial damage. The SIRT1/PGC1 alpha axis likely plays a crucial role in the compensatory mechanism for mitochondrial dysfunction in renal injury caused by selenium deficiency.

Summary: The study found that rats given AA alone showed significantly increased levels of liver enzymes, kidney function parameters, DNA damage markers, and proinflammatory cytokines. Meanwhile, Spirulina was able to improve abnormal serum biochemistry, reduce MDA and NO levels, and enhance antioxidant biomarkers in AA-intoxicated rats in a dose-dependent manner.

The Impact of Selenium Deficiency on Cardiovascular Function

Briana K. Shimada et al.

Summary: Selenium is an essential trace element crucial for cardiovascular health through its incorporation into selenoproteins, which are key to maintaining proper cardiovascular function. Deficiency in selenium can lead to various cardiovascular diseases, and selenium may potentially serve as a complementary therapy for prevention or treatment of cardiovascular disease by interacting with microRNAs.

Analysis of Bioavailability and Induction of Glutathione Peroxidase by Dietary Nanoelemental, Organic and Inorganic Selenium

Mitchell T. Ringuet et al.

Summary: The study found that inorganic, organic, and nanoelemental selenium can all be effectively incorporated into tissues, significantly increasing the antioxidant capability of GPx in the intestine and liver. Despite being 11 to 25 times less concentrated than the high selenium diet, lower selenium diets also produced similarly high levels of selenium in the liver, ileum, and plasma, independent of the selenium source.
